Offerdal
Accommodation in Offerdal
Offerdal combines hiking trails with striking landscapes and traces of regional history. One special destination is Bergtjärn: the black pond lies in a deep hollow in a bog, in the forest and framed by sheer cliffs. From Jänsmässholmen, an old path leads towards Sandtjärn and on to the pond; the walk takes about 30 to 40 minutes. A marked trail to Bergtjärn is approximately 4 kilometres long.
Hiking along old trails
The Nolasjöns Fäbodled is an old hiking trail about 15 kilometres long that connects eight summer farmsteads. At each farmstead, signs provide information about the location, the distance to the next summer farmstead and the farmstead itself; historical photographs supplement the information. The rich mountain flora can also be explored along the trail. So, if you are interested in traditional summer farmsteads and their history, this route offers specific insights into each stop as well as a hiking trail.
Prostbölestigen offers a different route: it runs from Offerdal Church via the farm at Prostböle to Vången in Alsen. Offerdal Church is one of the four oldest stone churches in Jämtland. This makes it possible to combine a hike with a building of notable cultural and historical significance, without the route itself being limited to a single theme.
Watercourses, lakes and forests
Short walks also lead to impressive natural destinations. You can reach Klöstafallet on the Långan from Litsnäset via a gravel road and then a footpath of about two kilometres. Kallforsen on the Åkerån is about 500 metres on foot from a gravel road; from Landön, follow the signs. The different trail lengths may be a factor when choosing an outing.
There are no marked trails for the Mjölkvattnet rundt tour; a map and compass are recommended. In the Åkerån/Långan area too, clear paths run alongside large stretches of the watercourses, but they are not marked. Mjölkvattnet itself is a long, narrow lake in a valley between the deeply rugged mountain ranges of Sösjöfjällen and Oldfjällen. If you are considering Offerdal as a holiday destination, you can therefore decide whether you would rather include marked trails or tours that require particular navigational skills in your travel plans.
The protected areas each have their own character: Oldklumpen covers 200 hectares of natural spruce and mountain birch forest. Its northern part contains traces of an important Sami cultural landscape, including four hearths, a stone foundation and a cold spring. Plant species that are not normally found in mountain regions also grow in the area. Offerdalsberg, in turn, consists mainly of very dense, old-growth-like spruce forest; the trees there are up to 300 years old.
Culture and the pace of your outings
In Ede, a local heritage centre run by the Offerdals hembygdsförening preserves and displays numerous buildings and objects from Offerdal. Together with the church, the summer farmsteads and the traces of Sami cultural landscapes, it offers various ways to explore the area's history. En kåsa kaffe offers guided tours in the Offerdalsfjällen mountains.
You can choose a holiday apartment in Offerdal based on the kind of holiday you are looking for: would you like to explore old trails and summer farmsteads, learn about the landscape and its plants, or combine nature experiences with regional culture?
