Holiday apartment in Messlingen: Lake, mountain landscape and winter sports

Messlingen combines Messlingesjön with a varied mountain landscape: the lake lies at the foot of Messlingen, while gorges, hiking trails, fishing waters and winter sports activities showcase different sides of the village. Between nature observation, old mountain pasture huts and sporting routes, this creates a range of destinations for active days.

Nature and bodies of water

Messlingesjön is an unregulated lake. On its southern side, it borders the Anådalen nature reserve and Anåfjället. There is also a derelict mountain pasture hut, grass meadows and old house foundations. Boat or canoe trips are possible on the lake.

Immediately north of the village of Messlingen in Härjedalen lies Fiskhålsgraven, a geologically unique gorge. It is known for an isolated population of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus); this fish species is protected. Another distinctive landform is Evagraven. It formed during the last Ice Age around 10,000 years ago, when meltwater cut through the mountain. Evagraven is approximately 800 metres long, up to 25 metres wide and 15 metres deep.

Fishing and hiking

The Messlingen fishing area offers fishing in mountain ponds, running waters and lakes. Its waters contain trout, Arctic char, brook trout, perch, burbot and stocked brook char. There are two different types of fishing permits available in Messlingen.

The Anådalen–Messlingen hiking section leads to the outflow of Messlingesjön. There, hikers can cross the Mittån via a suspension bridge. The Baggården–Fiskhålsgraven hiking trail begins at Baggården in Messlingen, is of moderate difficulty and is 9.5 km long.

Culture and regional trails

The Ruvallsrundan trail passes Baggården’s red log cabins and barns. The oldest of these buildings date from the 18th century. Another route is the Stadsåsrundan, which passes several privately operated mountain pasture huts, or summer farms, in the Funäsfjällen region. Along these trails, traditional buildings and forms of regional land use complement the landscape.

Winter and exercise

In Messlingen’s mountain landscape, half-day and full-day guided snowmobile tours can be booked. The Kappruet ski area is located immediately next to Messlingen. Kappruet is connected to the Funäsfjällen snowmobile trail network, and there are cross-country ski trails at the facility.

There are also various opportunities for exercise right in the village. The pump track in Messlingen is designed for all ages and experience levels. A wind shelter with tables, benches and a barbecue area is located directly next to the facility. At Messlingen’s trail centre, there are several loop trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The cross-country ski trails in Messlingen run through protected sections of forest and open mountain landscapes with expansive views.

Routes to Messlingen

The Ruvallen car park is a starting point for the Hällmålningsrundan trail. From Funäsdalen, Messlingen can be reached via Mittådalsvägen and Flatruetvägen. Flatruetvägen is Sweden’s highest public road.
