Ljungdalen is a destination for anyone looking to combine mountain landscapes, Sámi culture and a variety of trails. The area around Ljungdalen is a Sámi cultural landscape shaped by thousands of years of reindeer herding. It also offers historic sites, wide-ranging views and various opportunities for active or deliberately more peaceful days. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it is therefore worth first deciding on your preferred travel rhythm: Should the accommodation primarily serve as a base for trails and excursions, or provide space for a trip combining culture, landscapes and a few special experiences?

Sámi Culture and Local History

At the Hembygdsgården in Ljungdalen stands a turf hut built in the traditional Southern Sámi style. It brings the region’s building culture to life. Gammelgården Museum displays older household and work tools from Ljungdalen and the surrounding area. Gammelgården is also one of the oldest buildings in Ljungdalen. Nearby are two burial mounds that probably date from the younger Iron Age, between 400 and 1050 AD.

These places give a trip to Ljungdalen a historical dimension. Those who want to learn about regional traditions alongside nature experiences can combine a museum visit, the Hembygdsgården and exploring the landscape at their own pace. The Helags Fjällmara is also part of the local character: Ljungdalens GIF has organised it annually since 1985.

Mountain Trails for Active and Varied Days

For shorter outings, the Elljusspåret in Ljungdalen offers five routes of different lengths. Another route leads through the Dunsjöravinen via Dorditjärn. It follows the Finnbäcken for the most part, passes through forest and marshland, and climbs into the open mountain landscape. This allows you to choose between different landscape experiences when planning your day, without concentrating every experience into a single long tour.

Those looking for a multi-day hike can consider the three-day Vålådalen–Ljungdalen route. It passes through mountain birch forest, across wide mountain heaths and up to imposing mountain massifs. For a trip with a special historical or spiritual focus, the old pilgrims’ path at Allmänbacken in Ljungdalen can be included. It leads via Öjön and Helags to Nedalshytta in Norway.

Flatruet, Views and Excursions

Flatruet is a public road between Mittådalen and Ljungdalen and lies 975 metres above sea level. At Flatruet, you can hike, cycle or ski while enjoying 360-degree views of the mountain peaks. One section of the Jämt-Norgevägen is approximately 18 km long and consists of 48% trail, 31% gravel road and 21% asphalt. This information helps you choose excursions according to your preferred surface and desired route length.

Smaller destinations can also be included in your plans. Tandåfallet can be visited via a detour of approximately 500 metres from Tandån. Turridning in Ljungdalen offers half-day and full-day horseback rides in the mountains; longer tours are available on request. This means the range extends from a short detour to a longer outing in the mountain landscape.

Connections for Travel Planning

Taxi Ljungdalsfjällen operates between Ljungdalen and Kläppen. The Helagsexpressen runs from Kläppen in Ljungdalen to Helags. Passengers can bring their skis for the onward journey or make a return trip without skis. When choosing your accommodation, these connections may be useful for planning individual excursions. At the same time, Ljungdalen remains a place from which culture, trails and mountain experiences can be combined into a variety of daily itineraries.
