Discover Sandviken: Culture, Water and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Sandviken
Sandviken offers a range of reasons to visit: culture in the town centre, sound art, swimming experiences by the water and cycling routes for different levels. Those looking for a holiday apartment can choose the focus of their holiday accordingly – for example, between exhibitions and events, an active day on the bike or family-friendly experiences by the water.
Culture and Sound Art in the Centre
Sandviken’s Kulturcentrum is located in the town centre. It is a lively cultural centre where people can experience and create culture. Kulturcentrum includes the Sandviken municipal administration and Folkets Hus, as well as the town library, the cultural school, the Konsthallen art gallery, the Litteraturhuset Trampolin children’s literature centre and several external facilities. The cultural offering therefore ranges from the library and children’s literature to art and events.
Konsthallen presents exhibitions of contemporary art in a variety of aesthetic forms throughout the year. Guided tours, workshops and cultural events are available for all exhibitions. This creates a visit for families and culture enthusiasts where looking and participating can go hand in hand.
A special discovery is Soundwalk Sandviken. The 40-minute walk leads through parts of the town’s cultural landscape. Soundwalk Sandviken is also a permanent sound artwork at Kulturcentrum. Visitors can borrow headphones and an MP3 player or listen to the tour on their own mobile phone. Sandvikens kyrka adds architectural history to the cultural focus: it was built according to plans by Professor Israel Wahirnan, construction began in 1929, and it was inaugurated on 29 November 1931.
Events and Excursions for Different Days
Ferrum Arena is located in the Jernvallen area of Sandviken and is an arena for sports and cultural events. Göransson Arena is a multi-purpose arena for sports and cultural events, including concerts, art exhibitions, fairs and conferences. Depending on the time of travel and your interests, such places can complement the cultural part of a trip without limiting the holiday to a single activity.
For water-focused days, Parkbadet offers a leisure pool, a 25-metre swimming pool and whirlpools. The leisure area has slides providing more than 250 metres of sliding fun in total; Parkbadet also has a relaxation area and a gym. Hedåsbadet is a family-friendly bathing spot on Lake Storsjön with a sandy beach, bathing jetty, boat berths and pitches for caravans. It offers the chance to enjoy the outdoors by Lake Storsjön close to town.
Cycling and Nature in the Wider Region
Sandviken has a wide selection of cycling routes with varying levels of difficulty, suitable for beginners as well as competitive athletes. For longer stages, Gästrikeleden offers a different scale: the circular trail runs through Gästrikland from Gysinge via Hofors and Lingbo between Gävle and Sandviken, then back to Gysinge. It is 270 kilometres long and divided into 32 stages of varying lengths.
For further orientation in the region, Naturkartan Gästrikland brings together information about nature and outdoor activities in the municipalities of Sandviken, Gävle, Ockelbo and Hofors. Sandviken’s tourist information centre is centrally located in Kulturcentrum/Folkets Hus and provides information about excursion destinations, accommodation and events. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore first decide whether culture, water, cycling or exploring the wider surroundings should be the main focus.
