Österfärnebo combines the landscape of the Dalälven with distinctive cultural and historical sites. Pine forests on the Åsen ridges and the waters of the Dalälven shape the character of the surrounding area. In addition, there is Färnebofjärden National Park, historic buildings, a significant burial ground, and several ways to discover the area on the water or by bicycle. This allows you to plan your trip according to whether you are looking for nature experiences, cultural history, swimming, or active days.

The waterscape of Färnebofjärden

Färnebofjärden National Park can be explored with your own boat or with a boat rented from one of the park’s partners. This means that the water is not only the central feature of the landscape, but also a possible way to explore the area. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors can combine this focus with the cycling tours recommended for Österfärnebo, without having to limit the trip to a single activity.

For a break by the water, Edsviken is a good option. The bathing area is located on the Dalälven near Färnebofjärden Camping. This provides not only the opportunity to explore by boat, but also a specific place where you can plan time by the river. Which accommodation is right for your trip therefore depends primarily on whether you want to focus on water, landscape, culture, or changing daily plans.

Cultural history and historic sites

Koversta Gammelby has well-preserved, authentic buildings dating from the 18th century. The site offers its own historical focus and complements the nature experiences by the water with a look at older architectural styles and rural history.

Another notable stop is Hamre gravfält. The burial ground borders Färnebofjärden on one side and Hamrefjärden on the other. Seven graves are visible there today. Hamre gravfält is also considered Gästrikland’s largest burial ground and comprises approximately 200 graves. The combination of bodies of water and an archaeological site makes it a destination for anyone who wants to experience the landscape and the past together.

The present larger Österfärnebo kyrka was built between 1819 and 1822 in the neoclassical style typical of the period, replacing the older church. Its symmetrical form is clearly structured: the tower stands to the west, while the chancel and sacristy are located to the east. The church can be seen from another historical perspective at Svär-Gustavs bon, a fäbod by Fängsjön. From there, the church is visible on the opposite side of the lake.

The right holiday apartment for your travel plans

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Österfärnebo, it is worth deciding on your preferred daily rhythm first. Those who want to experience the national park and the water will plan differently from someone who wants to focus on historic sites such as Koversta Gammelby, Hamre gravfält, or Österfärnebo kyrka. Even for a trip involving several interests, it makes sense to choose accommodation whose location suits your personal focus and planned means of transport. The landscape, Edsviken bathing area, and recommended cycling tours offer a variety of options for active and more relaxing holiday days.
