Hamrånge: Culture, Trails and Archipelago Landscape on the Jungfrukusten Coast
Accommodation in Hamrånge
Hamrånge combines open cultural landscapes, forests, lakes and an archipelago landscape on the Jungfrukusten coast between Gävle and Söderhamn. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can choose the character of their destination according to their own holiday preferences: cultural history, walks, longer hikes or paddling experiences each create different focal points for planning the day.
Cultural history between church, park and cultural reserve
Hamrånge Church was built between 1847 and 1851 from stones taken from the medieval church. It therefore represents a history in which older traces and a later church building are directly connected. The Kastale also forms part of the area’s historical character. It was built in the 12th century as a defensive structure.
Another important place is Axmar bruk. Axmar bruk has been Gävleborg’s only cultural reserve since 2011. The English Park there dates from the 1860s. Walking trails lead through the English-inspired park, through the forest and along the boat harbour. This makes it possible to combine a cultural-historical outing with a variety of landscape impressions without limiting the day to a single theme.
Trails for different kinds of holiday days
For a shorter hike, Stora bruksrundan is a good option. The trail is 4 km long, runs around the Axmar bruk Cultural Reserve and follows the Stig till vrak trail. Those who prefer a longer route through the forest can choose Kyrkstigen, a 9.3 km forest trail. The people of Axmar used it in the past on their way to church; this historical connection remains a distinct part of the trail experience.
The marked Kristinastigen section is approximately 5 km long and forms part of Helgonleden. It passes through agricultural and forest landscapes and touches several archaeological remains. This gives travellers different ways to experience the outdoors when planning their trip: a shorter circular trail with a cultural focus, a longer historic forest trail or a route where landscapes and archaeological traces come together.
Archipelago landscape and paddling routes
At Axmar bruk, there are three paddling routes in an almost untouched archipelago landscape: Inomskärsturen, Kusö Kalvturen and Kusön övernattningstur. Those who see the water as a central part of their holiday can take these options into account when choosing their destination. Those who prefer to stay on land will find other ways to experience the landscape in the forests, by the lakes and in the open cultural landscapes.
