Axmar: Archipelago, Cultural Reserve and Nature Experiences
Accommodation in Axmar
Axmar combines the landscape of the southern Gulf of Bothnia coast with an unusual piece of industrial history. Among skerries, bays and lagoons, the Axmar bruk Cultural Reserve brings historic buildings, a harbour and the sea together with trails through nature. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Axmar can therefore plan their trip entirely according to their own interests: with culture, short walks, cycling routes or experiences on and beneath the water.
Axmar bruk Cultural Reserve and the History of the Hyttan
Axmar bruk became a cultural reserve in 2011. The cultural reserve includes the sea, the harbour, the Hyttan and Engelska Parken. The present-day Hyttan was built in 1861; iron production there ceased in 1927. This means that in Axmar, visitors can discover not only a landscape but also a specific chapter of the local industrial history.
The Hyttan, dating from the 1860s, is now a monument within the cultural reserve and serves as a venue for concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions and other activities. This creates a versatile cultural element for your travel plans: depending on your interests for the day, you can combine historical impressions with time at the harbour, a walk or observing nature.
Skerries, Lagoons and Underwater Habitats
The Axmar Nature Reserve is the largest contiguous archipelago area on the southern Gulf of Bothnia coast and covers approximately 4,500 hectares. Shallow bays and lagoons provide diverse underwater habitats for animals and plants. This landscape makes Axmar particularly interesting for travellers who do not want to spend their time at just one destination, but would rather discover different facets of the coast and nature.
The Axmar Blue Park is a particular highlight. Around 20 shipwrecks lie in the waters around Axmar bruk. Most of the wrecks are so shallow that they can be seen from the surface. The Axmar Blue Park can be explored on a round trip by paddling, snorkelling or scuba diving. This allows you to experience the maritime history in different ways, without reducing the activities to one single fixed route.
Hiking, Cycling and Kayaking
The “från stig till vrak” hiking trail begins at Axmar bruk and runs one kilometre northwards along the coast on the mainland. On Kusön, there is also an approximately three-kilometre forest trail between Badviken and Korshamn. For current planning, it is important to note that the hiking trails on Kusön are not currently cleared and cannot presently be hiked. The trail at Axmar bruk and the situation on Kusön should therefore be considered separately.
There are four cycling routes at Axmar bruk. Among other places, they lead to Gåsholma Fiskeläge and Gnagmurs Nature Reserve, passing through forest, along the coast and over the sea. In addition, Axmar has three kayaking routes: a shorter tour lasting a few hours, a day trip and an overnight tour. This allows you to choose between a single active excursion and a longer adventure on the water when planning your holiday.
Which Accommodation Location Suits Your Travel Plans?
When looking for a holiday apartment in Axmar, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on. If cultural history and events are central, Axmar bruk is the most important point of reference. Those primarily seeking coastal landscapes, skerries and experiences on the water can include the Axmar Blue Park and the nature reserves in their selection. For a trip with varied interests, flexible day planning is a good option, allowing historical impressions, trails through the landscape and activities on the water to sit side by side.
The individual routes differ considerably in character: the “från stig till vrak” trail is a one-kilometre coastal path on the mainland, the route on Kusön runs through the forest, and the kayaking options range from a few hours to an overnight tour.
More Destinations to Consider
