Holiday apartment in Vansbro – open-water swimming, nature trails and culture

Vansbro lies where the Vanån and Västerdalälven rivers meet. In the centre is the waterfront promenade at this confluence. The 3 km Vansbrosimningen was launched in 1950. During Vansbrosimningen, 2 km are swum in the Vanån and 1 km in the Västerdalälven. Ten people took part in the first event.

Nature and trails

There are currently ten nature reserves in Vansbro Municipality, for which the County Administrative Board is responsible. This landscape is complemented by 510 km of nature trails for hiking or cycling. The Storsjön runt route is an 8 to 12 km loop. It passes through spruce forest and wetlands and includes sections with wooden walkways. The hiking trail by Närssjön has rest areas.

Cycling and railways

Snöå Bruk was founded in 1811 as an ironworks with a forge. Beautiful hiking and mountain-bike trails start at Snöå Bruk. Several cycle paths in the Vansbro–Dala-Järna area run along the banks of the Västerdalälven and Vanån and have strategically placed benches.

Disused railway lines are also part of the character of the surrounding area. Vansbroäventyr offers rail-bike excursions on the disused section of the Inlandsbanan between Vansbro and Mora, with opportunities for beaver safaris. Rail-bike tours in Vansbro start in Dalasågen, 3 km north of Vansbro. The rail-bike route in Vansbro is approximately 15 km long. At Sågen Station, many kilometres of rail-bike track run through the wilderness.

Culture and history

Vansbro Church has a free-standing bell tower and stands in a pine grove on the eastern bank of the Vanån. It was consecrated in 1935, after parts of the industry in Vansbro initiated and financed its construction. The Vansbro Sawmill Museum has an authentic sawmill workers’ dwelling as its central exhibit and shows how workers lived during the first decades of the 20th century. The museum is open when the library is open.

Vansbro hembygdsgård at Udden includes a loft building, a bakehouse and a storehouse. Jofsstugan at Vansbro hembygdsgård formerly served, among other things, as overnight accommodation for log drivers on the Vanån. Lokparken has an outdoor stage and an old steam locomotive.

Winter and flavour

At Snöå Ski Stadium, cross-country skiing is available on illuminated trails in winter. Another local destination is Ryggåsstugan, a café in a special location at the outlet of Storsjön. All baked goods and dishes at Ryggåsstugan are prepared from scratch in its kitchen and bakery.
