Holiday apartment in Borlänge – Nature, culture and trails
Borlänge combines historic sites with a varied landscape of lakes, forests, protected areas and marked trails. Anyone considering a holiday apartment in Borlänge will encounter a destination where cultural sites by the water, tranquil natural areas, cycling routes and winter activities reveal different aspects of a stay.
Culture and history
One special place is Ornässtugan, a wooden building from the early 16th century at its original location on Lake Runn between Borlänge and Falun. The Ornässtugan Museum opened in 1758 and is considered Sweden’s second-oldest museum. The visitor site also includes a café that makes its baked goods on site and offers a selection for people who avoid gluten, milk or eggs.
Gammelgården is an open-air museum with 35 buildings and thousands of objects representing Borlänge’s historical roots. Midsummer celebrations, Christmas markets, dance evenings and outdoor church services take place there. During the summer months, there is also a café serving lunch.
Torsång Church is considered the oldest church in Dalarna and has largely retained its original appearance. It is located at a historic meeting point on the headland between the outflows of Runn and Ösjön into the Dalälven. At that time, the waterways were important transport routes, which closely connected the church’s location with the historical use of the landscape.
Nature and protected landscapes
There are a total of 22 nature reserves in Borlänge Municipality. Nine of them are managed by the municipality and are municipally owned; these nine areas serve as destinations for excursions and everyday exercise.
Holmsjöarna features an especially diverse landscape: the area includes reed beds, marshland, waterside meadows, pastureland, fields, lakes, waterways, and deciduous and coniferous forests. This creates a rich birdlife that can be observed from birdwatching towers and along boardwalks. A marked hiking trail about 3 kilometres long runs through the nature reserve between two car parks. Side trails lead to birdwatching towers and a rest area. The hiking trail, birdwatching towers and rest area are accessible year-round.
Frostbrunnsdalen is a steep, deep ravine with lush vegetation and a rich variety of plant and animal life. The area has several trails and rest areas, as well as a café that is open in summer.
Trails through the forest and along the lake
Gyllbergen is a high-altitude, roadless wilderness area with cabins, wind shelters, and marked summer and winter trails. Many kilometres of these trails enable long hikes and ski tours away from roads and traffic noise. Gyllbergen is also home to Dragbergsgata, a fissure northeast of Dragberget.
The Runn Runt cycling route runs along Lake Runn through the scenic surroundings between Falun and Borlänge. The route is mainly on asphalt and partly on gravel roads. Another route is Bysjörundan, a cycling trail just over 10 kilometres long in northern Borlänge that passes through Kvarnsveden and Sör Amsberg. The route is marked with red posts bearing white crosses and has 17 information boards and four rest areas along the way. Bysjörundan can also be walked. For mountain biking, Bjusanleden begins in Plättbacken and leads to Bjusan.
Winter and active excursions
Romme Alpin is located 13 kilometres outside Borlänge and has 34 ski runs and 14 lifts. The ski resort offers skiing in all four cardinal directions and has a large beginner’s area. Alongside the marked winter trails in Gyllbergen, this provides another clearly defined winter sports destination in the Borlänge area.
Science and unusual visitor attractions
At the 2047 Science Center, visitors can explore natural sciences and technology in a fun, hands-on way. Attractions include a climbing wall, a steel exhibition, a race-car track and a planetarium.
Äventyrsgruvan in Tuna Hästberg is located in a former mine that closed in 1968 and offers an underground visitor experience. No prior experience is required, but a normal level of fitness is needed. The ascent and descent are compared to walking up and down a 25-storey building.
