Idkerberget combines an impressive mining history with trails through the nearby wilderness of Gyllbergen. Mining was already being carried out here in the 18th century. Today, you can encounter traces of this development alongside marked summer and winter trails, shelters and convenient rest areas. This gives the area a variety of reasons to visit: historical discoveries, active days in nature and a special experience underground.

Mining History in Idkerberget

The history of mining can be traced through several preserved buildings and facilities. The new mine in Idkerberget was opened around the turn of the 20th century, with a cableway to Ulfshyttan. As mineral extraction intensified at that time, the ore and personnel headframes still found here today were built, along with the office next to the headframes.

One of the few remaining structures from the former mining operations is the ore headframe. The property Idkerberget 1:4 is also home to an old railway warehouse, with the year 1913 displayed on its gable. There was a separate railway station on the Rämshyttan–Idkerberget line in 1912. The former station building in Idkerberget is still preserved on the property Idkerberget 8:16. The Idkerberget chapel also tells the story of the local development: it was built in 1904 as a Folkets hus by Idkerbergets Gruv AB.

Gyllbergen: Trails Through the Wilderness

Gyllbergen, a high-altitude, roadless wilderness area, lies in the vicinity of Idkerberget. Marked summer and winter trails lead through this landscape, while shelters and cabins complement the trail network. Anyone wishing to combine a trip with exercise and nature observation can choose between different seasons and trail experiences here without losing sight of the area's historical focus.

To reach Spånsfäbodarna, turn west at Idkerberget. The signposted starting point is 3 km away and offers parking, a toilet and a rest cabin. In the nearby Gyllbergen Nature Reserve, you will also find a rest area, a hiking trail, ski trails, a dry toilet and a warming hut. These specific access points make it easier to structure active days according to your own plans.

An Underground Adventure at Äventyrsgruvan

Another special experience is offered by Äventyrsgruvan. On the adventure tour, experienced guides lead you 80 metres underground. Families have their own tour, offering an adventure without climbing and without a safety harness. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between a guided tour reaching greater depths and an offering specifically designed for families.

The Spånsanleden trail leads from Äventyrsgruvan to the southern entrance to the Gyllbergsområdet area. This allows you to choose activities according to your personal interests: historical sites are the focus in the village, while the surrounding area offers trails, nature and guided experiences.

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Idkerberget, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on. If you primarily want to learn about the mining history, you can devote your days to the preserved headframes, the ore headframe, the former railway buildings and the chapel. If you want to spend as much time outdoors as possible, Gyllbergen, Gyllbergen Nature Reserve and the starting point for Spånsfäbodarna should be part of your considerations.
