Discover Hedemora: Urban History, Nature and Trails
Accommodation in Hedemora
Hedemora combines urban history with special trails through nature and the countryside. When planning your trip, you can choose between a cultural and historical town walk, longer pilgrimage stages and clearly described nature experiences. This makes it possible to choose a holiday apartment in Hedemora that suits your own interests in excursions, without every day of your holiday having to follow the same rhythm.
Town Walk and Historic Sites
Kulturpromenaden is a town walk through Hedemora's oldest districts and to buildings and places of cultural and historical interest. The tour is therefore suitable for anyone who wants to get to know the character of the town not only through individual sights, but also through its established neighbourhoods. The church is an important historical reference point: it is the only surviving building from the medieval town of Hedemora and was built in the late 13th or early 14th century. The dating is deliberately left within this period, illustrating how far back the history of the place reaches.
Teaterladan is also one of the notable historical landmarks. The building was erected in the 1820s by a wholesaler from Hedemora. Hedemora Gammelgård offers another insight into the region's past. The historic farm complex is one of the oldest of its kind in Sweden and is located by Lake Hönsan. Hedemora's official Midsummer celebration was also held there.
Pilgrimage Trail and Nature on the Edge of Town
The Hedemora Pilgrimsled passes through scenic countryside and offers opportunities for prayer, silence and contemplation. At approximately 130 kilometres in length, with stages of around 15 to 22 kilometres, it is aimed at travellers who want to plan their hike around individual sections. The route passes all the churches in the parish. This offers a different perspective on Hedemora than the town walk: here, the focus is on the distance, the landscape and contemplative moments.
A more compact option is the municipal Stadssjön nature reserve in the parts of the Hovran area close to town. A wooden boardwalk approximately 300 metres long runs through the area. The route can be used on foot, while running, with a wheelchair, pram or walking frame. Especially when travelling with different preferences for each day, this clearly described short route is a practical option alongside the longer hiking trails.
Excursions Around Hedemora
Immediately outside Hedemora runs Husbyringen, a 60-kilometre nature and cultural trail for hiking and cycling, with numerous places to visit along the route. This allows you to add longer activities to your stay without abandoning your focus on urban history. Northeast of Hedemora lies the historic industrial site Stjärnsund, which is associated with Christopher Polhem's 18th-century operation.
When choosing your accommodation, it is worth first deciding on your preferred travel rhythm: Kulturpromenaden and the historic buildings suggest a stay focused on the town and exploration, while Pilgrimsled and Husbyringen provide more scope for planned hiking or cycling days. Stadssjön adds a short trail with clearly defined uses to this selection. For further destinations, you can also visit Dala Husby, Vikmanshyttan and Garpenberg.
