Hedemora is the oldest town in Dalarna and was granted town privileges in 1446. In the town centre and the surrounding area, local history, cultural trails, lakes and wetlands come together.

Culture

Hedemora town centre features well-preserved wooden houses and a beautiful cobbled square. The Cultural Promenade route is a walking tour through the oldest parts of the town and past buildings and sites of cultural and historical significance. The route is approximately 5 km long and divided into three stages; parking is available at Stora Torget.

Hedemora Gammelgård is one of Sweden’s oldest open-air museums. The museum houses a collection of around 4,500 old objects, especially scythes. Since the 1820s, the Teaterladan has hosted exhibitions, performances and refreshments; the building has been listed as a historic monument since 1964.

Trails and events

The Hedemora Pilgrim Trail is a circular route starting and ending in Hedemora. Every autumn, the town also hosts Kulturnatt, a cultural festival with activities for children.

Nature

The Hovran area is a wetland formed by the Dalälven, the adjacent lakes and Lake Hovran. The area is designated both as a biosphere area and as a Ramsar site. Parts of it are accessible on foot from Hedemora town centre and are suitable for recreation and exercise.

In the Stadssjön Nature Reserve, there is a signposted 3.3 km circular trail with an easy route, footbridges and wide gravel paths. The trail around Stadssjön can be used by pedestrians, wheelchair users, people with prams and rollator users.

Water

The Hedemora cold-bath house is located on the eastern shore of Lake Hönsan in the centre of Hedemora. It has one fixed and one floating bathing jetty, as well as a diving tower. The Husby-Hedemora fishing area includes Flinesjön, Hovran, Hedemora’s town lakes and several other lakes. On the Dalälven, it is possible to paddle approximately 50 km from Fäggeby via Hedemora to Avesta.

In the surrounding area, at the southern end of Lake Flinesjön, there is a birdwatching tower with good views of the waterside meadows.

Surroundings

The surrounding area is home to Husbyringen, Sweden’s first ecomuseum. The nature and cultural trail is six Swedish miles long and leads to unique industrial and cultural heritage sites. Norns bruk is also nearby, a well-preserved ironworks with origins dating back to the 17th century.

The restored English-style park near Kloster features a gravel circular path through the gorge of the Klosterån. The manor house at Kloster also contains a small museum about the area’s long industrial history.

Food and drink

Oppigårds Bryggeri offers brewery tours for groups by prior booking. A beer-tasting package is available as an optional extra.
