Bjursås: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Bjursås
Bjursås combines diverse natural surroundings with trails for short outings, longer hikes, cycling tours and cross-country skiing in winter. It is also home to Lake Bjursen, historic sites and events at Dössberget.
Forests and hiking trails for different day plans
In Bjursås prästskog, old spruce forest, pine forest, deciduous forest and marshland alternate with a natural stream environment, a hay meadow and pastureland. The 900-metre-long Sandbäcksstigen trail runs through this area and has five information boards about the different sites and the natural environment. Marked trails, a rest area with a shelter, a barbecue area with firewood and a dry toilet complete the facilities at prästskog. This makes it possible to plan a nature outing with different focuses: you can choose the short educational trail or combine the landscape with additional trails during a longer stay.
The 6.5-kilometre-long Bäverleden trail runs around Bjursberget. At Hanses Hällar there is a viewpoint, a barbecue area and a shelter. The approximately 3-kilometre route each way along Dössbergsleden offers a different scale; it leads from Bäverhyddans Värdshus to Dössbergets hembygdsgård. The 35-kilometre-long Vildmarksleden Bjursås begins at the illuminated running track above Dössberget in Bjursås. It runs mainly through forest, as well as through villages and fäbod settlements, and past viewpoints.
The Flymyrskasernen charcoal burner’s hut lies along the Vildmarksleden. Overnight stays are possible there; the hut has a firepit and 12 sleeping places. You can enjoy the view from Ärtknubben.
Lake, cross-country skiing and cycling
In summer, you can swim in Lake Bjursen. Bjursås also offers good fishing opportunities all year round. During the colder season, around 60 kilometres of cross-country ski tracks are available in Bjursås and Sörskog; no trail fee is charged. This allows you to include water-based days, peaceful nature experiences and winter activities in your travel plans without limiting your stay to just one season.
Cyclists will also find a range of options: the signposted Biking Dalarna routes in Bjursås vary in length and terrain profile and start at the campsite. The forests and mountains in Bjursås parish also offer varied terrain for mountain biking at different ability levels.
Culture, history and small discoveries
Bjursås Church was built between 1793 and 1803. Its altarpiece dates from 1742. At Dössbergets hembygdsgård, you can see furniture and household furnishings from the 17th to the 19th century. Various events take place at Dössberget throughout the year, including artist performances, markets, classic car evenings, children’s theatre and amateur theatre. This creates a cultural counterpoint to the forest trails and sporting activities.
A small culinary treat is also part of the experience: the ice cream from Glassfabriken på Dössberget is served at Dössberget and also sold at Handelsbod Björsgården. Visitors can try it there in summer. If you do not want to plan your trip exclusively around sporting activities, you can combine these cultural and culinary moments with a visit to the historic facilities or an event.
