Jämshög: Discover the Book Town, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Jämshög
Jämshög combines literary traces, art in the townscape and paths through surroundings shaped by forests and lakes. If you are looking for a mix of cultural discoveries and active days for your trip, you can get to know the town as a starting point for a wide variety of holiday experiences.
Literature is part of Jämshög’s character
Jämshög Library has a dedicated room named after the writer Sven Edvin Salje. The Salje Room contains part of his private library, including books with dedications and calendars with his own notes. The collection also includes various translations and editions of his books. These personal details make the room especially interesting for anyone who wants to discover literature not only through finished works, but also through the traces of their creation and the author’s life.
Jämshög is continuing to develop as an international Book Town. The focus is on literature, encounters and activities that promote reading. In Jämshög’s Book Town, you can also explore a second-hand bookshop considered one of the largest antiquarian bookshops in southern Sweden. Another literary connection leads to the 250-metre-long Hantverkaregatan: Sven Edvin Salje’s novel “Hantverkaregatan” portrays the street and takes readers into his childhood in the 1920s.
Art, local history and a preserved town centre
The public artwork “Förspel” consists of two two-and-a-half-metre-high book pages shaped like a literary plough. You will find it in the park between Läkarevillan and Hantverkaregatan in Jämshög. At the roundabout, “Pennans makt” also takes up the image of a blank page. In a figurative sense, the work represents continuing to write the history of the area.
Jämshög’s centre has preserved much of its character from the time when the town was the centre of an agriculturally shaped area. Jämshögs Hembygdsmuseum presents the lives of Harry Martinson, the Nobel Prize winner in Literature, and Sven Edvin Salje. The museum also includes exhibitions on Jämshög’s history. An audio guide created by the Diocese of Lund is available for Jämshög Church. When planning a trip with a cultural focus, these literary and local-history themes can be combined well without every holiday day having to follow the same pattern.
Forests, lakes and trails around the town
The nearby Halen Nature Reserve, characterised by forests and lakes, is within walking distance of the built-up areas of Olofström and Jämshög. It offers hiking trails, running routes, bridleways, picnic areas and shelters. This means you can choose between a day devoted to literature and local history and time spent in nature. The nearest bus stops to Halen Nature Reserve include Nebbebodagården, served by routes 561 and 635, as well as Jämshögs skola.
Ljungryda is also part of the nearby region. From Jämshög, the nature reserve can be reached by bus to Östafors and then on foot via a route of just under one kilometre. If you would like to plan longer walks, the Blekingeleden meets the Skåneleden at the western end of Blekinge near Jämshög and Boafall. The Olofström section of the Blekingeleden is approximately 40 kilometres long. Along this section, overnight accommodation in the form of shelters is available at regular intervals.
Choose the right base for your trip
When looking for accommodation in Jämshög, you can first consider which themes should shape your trip. A holiday apartment or holiday home in the town places the Book Town, the library, the artworks and the preserved town centre at the heart of your planning. If you mainly want to include trails and nature experiences, Halen, Ljungryda and the Blekingeleden should be taken into account when choosing your location. This leaves room both for active days and for quieter hours with literature and local history.
If you would like to extend your search to other destinations, you can also include Vilshult, Olofström and Kyrkhult in your further travel planning.
