Discover Moncada: Archaeology, History and Holiday Apartments

Moncada begins with a concrete trace in the landscape: the Ruta Cavanilles, also known as the Ruta de los Iberos, draws on the work of the botanist in Moncada and makes the remains of an ancient Iberian road surface, the “carriladas”, visible.

Culture

The Museu Arqueològic Municipal de Moncada is located on the first floor of the former town hall. Its archaeological exhibitions are divided into four sections: prehistory, Iberian culture, the Roman world, and the Middle Ages, modern era and present day. The permanent exhibition includes artefacts from ancient civilisations through to the Middle Ages.

The cultural points of interest therefore range from chronologically arranged archaeological collections to individual buildings and named sites. The church, Islamic dwelling and convent stand alongside the museum as different historical references, while silk and the Holy Week event provide further independent themes.

Moncada is also home to a silk museum that can be visited. Holy Week includes the traditional Misteri de la Passió, which was declared an event of tourist interest in 1967.

History

The parish church of San Jaime Apóstol preserves elements of an earlier Gothic temple. The ruins of an old Islamic dwelling can be seen on Plaza Madre Francisca. The Convento de las Hermanas Franciscanas de la Inmaculada is a sight in Moncada.

Landscape

Moncada is surrounded by the landscape of L’Horta Nord, a broad agricultural plain with paths alongside irrigation channels that can be explored on foot or by bicycle.

Moncada thus combines two clearly recognisable forms of day out: indoor spaces, buildings and the Holy Week event stand opposite the paths along the irrigation channels. This local combination of cultural sites and the L’Horta Nord landscape can be considered separately when planning your own visit, without mixing the themes.

The destinations in the surrounding area complement this contrast with further clearly distinguishable areas: castles and museums stand alongside a zoo and beach, while viewpoints and mountains provide a landscape accent.
