Guadarrama – Nature, Culture and Historic Trails

Guadarrama combines protected landscapes, medieval heritage and trails that bring nature and history to life. Among rocks, pine trees and historic sites, a variety of themes await visitors.

Nature

Near Puerto de León, the protected landscape area includes the rock formation between Collado de la Sevillana and Peña del Cuervo. The protected area also includes the pine trees growing there and the rest of the natural vegetation, including the spring at the foot of the rock. A beautiful landscape in the municipality of Guadarrama was placed under protection in 1930 to commemorate six centuries of the “Libro del Buen Amor”.

Alongside pine trees, the natural surroundings of Guadarrama are home to lush ferns and bearberry bushes, where deer, badgers and foxes find shelter.

Culture

The Centro Cultural La Torre preserves a medieval Mudéjar apse, a wall and a tower. Until the end of the 19th century, it was the Church of San Miguel Arcángel and has Romanesque origins. The Centro Cultural La Torre can be visited by prior arrangement with the tourism services of the municipality of Guadarrama. A guided tour is supplemented by information panels covering the municipality of Guadarrama’s most important historical milestones.

For many years, the Mercado Medieval has taken place in Guadarrama on the first weekend of August. It features market stalls selling handicrafts, food and other products. Merchants, craftspeople and artists appear in contemporary historical clothing.

Trails

El bosque plateado is a 10.3-kilometre route of moderate difficulty that begins at Parking Cordobés. Along the route, explanations provide information about former occupations associated with wood.

The “Guadarrama: In the Footsteps of the War” offering includes more than 500 sites. These are grouped into 21 positions and explained in 15 interpretive sketches. The offering also provides ten routes by difficulty level, as well as downloadable information about points of interest for independent exploration.

The Ruta de los Pinares de Guadarrama is a 14.2-kilometre circular hike. The different route lengths, circular format and stated difficulty can be considered side by side for personal planning.

Information on length, circular format and difficulty provides different points of comparison. This makes it possible to distinguish between an individual route, a circular trail and a thematically structured offering. The combination of trails and historic sites also follows its own structure in the “Guadarrama: In the Footsteps of the War” offering, while El bosque plateado provides additional explanations about former occupations.
