Discover Santa María de la Vega: Festivals, Wine and Local History
Santa María de la Vega is located in a fertile landscape with great diversity of flora and fauna. Nature, local history, wine, and festival culture can be viewed as different perspectives on the village; you can weigh them separately according to your personal travel interests. The villagescape combines landscape features with traditional houses and typical wine cellars, while the festivals and the memorial rollo represent further distinct facets.
You can open additional village pages here: Gamones, Badilla, Padornelo, Pedralba de la Pradería, Moralina, Pias, Losacino and Muelas del Pan.
The various features of the village are connected in different ways: the landscape describes the natural setting, the wine cellars and vineyards refer to the local wine tradition, and the festivals structure the events calendar. Local history is represented by the parish church and the memorial rollo, each with its own focus.
Nature
Various outdoor activities are practised in Santa María de la Vega, including hunting and fishing. For your planning, you can consider the activity types mentioned separately from cultural events and historical references. Nature-related interests and events held on specific dates do not have to share the same focus. The fertile landscape and the diversity of flora and fauna form the natural setting described here, in which these two activities take place.
Culture
The parish church of Santa María de la Vega was built on the site of a former hermitage. Santa María de la Vega has traditional houses. Typical wine cellars are located on the outskirts of the village. The vineyards of Santa María de la Vega produce wines under the designation “Vinos de la Tierra”. For your travel planning, you can consider sacred history, traditional architectural forms, and wine as separate topics. In this way, the ecclesiastical origin, the villagescape, and winegrowing each represent a distinct cultural connection.
History
Santa María de la Vega inaugurated a memorial rollo commemorating the union, one hundred years ago, of the former villages of Redelga de la Polvorosa and Verdenosa de la Polvorosa. The memorial rollo is regarded as a historical symbol of its own jurisdiction, as well as of the communities’ ability to govern themselves and establish shared rules for community life. It depicts Redelga and Verdenosa as united in a new common municipality and symbolises their inherited heritage and shared identity. For visitors interested in history, the specific occasion being commemorated and the symbolic meaning can be considered separately. The memorial rollo thus connects the historically defined union of the former villages with the aforementioned ideas of independence and shared responsibility.
Festivals
The August festivals in Santa María de la Vega are held in honour of Our Lady of the Assumption and Saint Roch. The celebration of the Virgen del Carmen takes place on the last weekend of September. The Virgen del Carmen festivities include a mass followed by a procession. You can take these different dates and programmes into account separately when planning your trip. Traditionally, the Virgen del Carmen festivities end with a chocolatada with churros. The August festivals and the celebration of the Virgen del Carmen therefore differ both in timing and in the respective religious reference and programme described here.
