La Cuesta lies on the southern slope of the 1,722-metre-high Alto del Hayedo. From La Cuesta, there is a view of the Sierra del Alba. Culture and History
In the 18th century, La Cuesta had a transhumance system involving more than 9,000 Merino sheep. The painter Bernardo Martínez del Barranco is also associated with the village: his parents came from La Cuesta, and he was a pupil of Antonio Rafael Mengs and Corrado Giaquinto. Pastoralism and art history thus provide two clearly different approaches to the village's past.
The Palacio S. XVIII in La Cuesta is a restored 18th-century manor house associated with the Del Río family. It retains its original interior layout as well as wrought-iron work on the balconies and windows. The Palacio de los del Río is a 17th-century palace with a Tuscan-order portal and a curved pediment finished with volutes.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Valles in La Cuesta appears to date from the mid-16th century; the adjoining chapel was added in the 17th century and the sacristy in the 18th century. The church was commissioned by the Del Río noble family and built by the master builder Lucas de la Vega. Its altarpieces are housed in the Diocesan Museum of El Burgo de Osma Cathedral.
