Holiday apartment in Huerta: discover the river, trails and culture

Huerta reveals its distinctive character on the Tormes. The river, the riverside paths, the parish church of San Bartolomé and the summer cuisine each add their own special touches.

Parish Church of San Bartolomé de Huerta

A cultural landmark in Huerta is the parish church of San Bartolomé de Huerta. It has a single-nave floor plan, a pronounced transept, and a main chapel that is semicircular on the inside and polygonal on the outside. The church also contains a high altarpiece made by the carver Juan Sánchez in 1749. During the restoration of the parish church, two Romanesque capitals were discovered in 2011 and 2012.

The Tormes as a natural and recreational area

Near Huerta, the Tormes makes a 110-degree bend. The Huerta–Cabrerizos–Salamanca canoe route passes through an autumnal riverscape on the Tormes that is rich in river fauna. Canoeing is possible on the calm waters of the Tormes near Huerta. The perspective from the water connects with the paths along the riverbank: those not travelling by canoe can choose the riverside paths for a slower-paced exploration. Depending on the day's plans, the focus can therefore be either on travelling across calm waters or on observing the riverscape along the riverbank.

Paths between Los Cantos and Encinas de Abajo

The Caminito de los Novios runs from the path above Los Cantos beach along the bank of the Tormes to a wooden bridge. The path is approximately 2 kilometres long and offers various riverscapes and information boards about the surrounding area along the way. Its approximate length can be taken into account as a separate section when planning the day. Along the Caminito, the start above the beach, the riverside route and the wooden bridge form a specific sequence of landmarks for orientation.

Another option is the route from Huerta to Encinas de Abajo. It is approximately 5 kilometres long and is largely flat. Those planning this route can take its approximate length and mostly flat profile into account together. The choice between these two paths can therefore be based on the distance and the terrain. At approximately five kilometres, this route is longer than the Caminito de los Novios, which is approximately two kilometres long. In the municipality of Huerta, the banks of the Tormes attract bathers during the summer months.

Ruta Escultórica and summer cuisine

The Ruta Escultórica is associated with the “Parque Fluvial de Cultura y Ecología” project, which was developed in 2001 in cooperation with the University of Mainz in Germany. For a summer break, Huerta has a summer chiringuito on the riverbank near Los Cantos beach. It serves grilled dishes, paellas and freshly prepared pinchos. Los Cantos beach is therefore the shared point of reference: the chiringuito is located near the beach, and the Caminito de los Novios begins above this beach.
