El Gejo de los Reyes: Culture, Quartz and Trails

Culture and History

The parish church of El Gejo de los Reyes is dedicated to Saint Blaise. El Gejo de los Reyes preserves a parish church built from dressed ashlar stones, with a bell gable and an entrance portal. Those approaching the village through its architectural heritage can perceive the dedication and the clearly identified architectural elements separately.

El Gejo de los Reyes also has a museum that illustrates rural life in the villages during the 20th century through numerous rooms and hundreds of objects. The church and the museum place emphasis on different aspects: the former can be understood through a specific architectural form, while the latter can be understood through numerous testimonies of village life.

An archaeological excavation in April 2021 uncovered a burial chamber from the post-Roman period at Teso Santo in El Gejo de los Reyes. Teso Santo is located on the highest hill in the surroundings of El Gejo de los Reyes. For context, the find site, elevation and museum theme can be considered alongside one another chronologically.

Landscape and Trails

The “Senderos del Bajo Tormes” trail network runs through El Gejo de los Reyes. In the wider regional surroundings of El Gejo de los Reyes, Barrocal is a mountain, as is Cabeço da Botaca; Teso Santo is a hill there. When planning, you can distinguish between the trail network through the village and the more broadly defined references to mountains and hills.

A guided georoute entitled “Georuta por los granitos del extremo noroeste de la provincia de Salamanca” included a visit to the old quartz mine of El Gejo de los Reyes; at the mine, the local mining tradition, the extraction of quartz, and past and present uses of quartz were discussed. During the first decades of the 20th century, the El Gejo mine produced numerous smoky quartz geodes, which were mainly used for ornamental purposes. When comparing the georoute and the mining history, the route, mining tradition, quartz and its uses can be viewed as different levels.

Cuisine

At the traditional “Matanza Tradicional” in 2025, morcillas, chorizos and salchichones were prepared, and liver, grilled pork tenderloin and patatas meneás were sampled. Preparation and tasting represent two sides of the same event; you can place the culinary focus alongside culture, landscape and mining.
