On the riverbank and at the edge of a terrace above the river, La Serna’s location and the riverbank form a viewpoint with expansive views over the river floodplain and the accompanying forest. Along the banks of the Carrión River, there are prepared walking paths; La Serna lies in the area of the Vega de Saldaña irrigated by the Carrión River.
Landscape
For your planning, the two landscape perspectives can be clearly distinguished: the elevated view over the floodplain and forest, and the path along the water. Depending on your preferred focus, you can consider these perspectives separately from culture, cheese and festival dates. The watercourse and the elevated view thus stand as two clearly distinguishable landscape perspectives alongside the floodplain and accompanying forest.
Culture and history
The parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary dates from the 16th century. Its main altar is a work by Juan de Espinosa. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary has a single-nave layout with side chapels beneath Gothic rib vaults, as well as a chancel covered by a barrel vault. The dating, the main altar created by Juan de Espinosa, and the spatial arrangement belong to different levels of the same building: together, they connect its period of construction, artistic detail and architectural structure.
In the northern part of La Serna, a Roman villa was discovered at a site known as “Los Moros”. It may have been founded towards the end of the 1st century and continued to exist until the 5th century. When personally planning a cultural focus, you can treat the church building and archaeology as two independent approaches.
Cuisine
La Serna is home to the Quesería Artesanal del Río Carrión. Its Puebla Luis cheese brand is considered artisan-made and natural, as well as free from preservatives and colouring agents. The semi-matured “Puebla Luis” cheese made from raw sheep’s milk by the Quesería Artesanal del Río Carrión in La Serna received a Cincho de Oro in 2026.
Puebla Luis offers artisan-made cheeses, including semi-matured and matured cheeses, as well as sheep’s cheese with blue mould, along with processed cheese spreads and yoghurts. For travel planning, you can classify the cheese selection as a separate culinary focus alongside landscape and culture; specific varieties and product forms are the main consideration.

Festival and annual date
The Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on 15 August includes Masses, open-air dance events, children’s and traditional games, as well as performances by folk music groups. A communal meal takes place on the eve. If you are arranging your stay around a specific date, 15 August provides a clear reference point for planning.
