Santiago Millas – Historic Ensemble and Maragato Architecture

Santiago Millas was protected in 1999 as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Historic Ensemble” category. Separate protection zones have been established for Barrio Alto and Barrio Bajo within the protected historic ensemble.

Culture

The most important building types in the historic ensemble include muleteers’ houses and stone enclosures. The streets of Santiago Millas are characterised by Maragato architecture, including stone buildings with domed kitchens, roofs made of Arabic tiles, corridors, galleries, and blue-painted doors. Santiago Millas also preserves numerous houses with traditional muleteer architecture; some traditional houses still retain old domed kitchens.

The architectural features can be understood through more than individual points of interest. When looking at the streets, the building type, materials, roof form, and colour details emerge as different layers of the same townscape; for personal travel planning, these focal points can be considered separately or as a cultural whole.

A house built by Santiago Alonso Cordero in the 19th century is a well-known example in Santiago Millas.

History

The Museo de la Arriería Maragata is located in the Barrio de Arriba district of Santiago Millas, in a typical, fully preserved and restored muleteer’s house. At the beginning of the 20th century, this house served as the residence of Julián Alonso Rodríguez; it was later used for a boys’ school and as accommodation for female teachers.

In Santiago Millas, the Church of Santiago Apóstol and the Chapel of San Miguel are worthwhile destinations. Three other churches are located in the surroundings of Santiago Millas: La Catedral de Santa María de Astorga, the Santuario de Ntra.
