Valdenoceda: Tower, Los Hocinos and San Miguel Arcángel

Culture and history
Casa Grande is located at the entrance to Barrio Grande. It belongs to the De la Garza family and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1978.
The town's industrial past dates back to the middle of the 18th century: at that time, the Real Compañía Guipuzcoana de Caracas founded a textile factory in Valdenoceda. In the 19th century, it became a flour mill and, at the beginning of the 20th century, Spain's first artificial silk factory.
The Church of San Miguel Arcángel was built at the end of the 12th century and preserves almost the entire original Romanesque nave as well as the original tower. Its exterior features coupled windows on the tower, reused reliefs on the stair turret and a portal protected by a portico with four semicircular arches.
The cemetery associated with Valdenoceda Prison forms part of the area's history of remembrance. Work to exhume the victims began there in March 2007; the remains of 114 men were recovered.
Landscape and trails
After flowing between the Sierras de Tudanca and La Tesla and forming the Los Hocinos gorge, the Ebro reaches the Valdivielso Valley.
The signposted PRC-BU 186 Sendero de los Hocinos circular hiking trail begins in Valdenoceda. The circular route covers 18.30 kilometres; the walking time is estimated at 4 hours and 30 minutes.
The route leads to Alto de Torada and through the Los Hocinos gorge; it crosses the Ebro via the Puente del Aire.
The stated walking time and the various trail surfaces provide different factors for planning your own day. The signposted Merindad de Valdivielso MTB circular route for mountain bikes officially starts in Valdenoceda, is well signposted and runs along dirt tracks, paths, local roads and a short section of a main road.
