Hortigüela on the Arlanza: Monastery, Juniper Grove and History

Hortigüela lies on the right bank of the Arlanza River and in an extensive juniper grove at the foot of the Sierra de las Mamblas. For planning purposes, the area’s natural environment, cultural history and archaeological traces can be considered as distinct points of access.

Nature and landscape

The Sabinares del Arlanza-La Yecla Nature Park partly encompasses the municipality of Hortigüela. The Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza lies in a bend of the Arlanza River within the Sabinares del Arlanza-La Yecla Nature Park.

There are numerous caves and springs in the surroundings of Hortigüela, including Fuente Azul. A dolmen is located on the banks of the San Martín River in the area of Hortigüela. Archaeological remains from the Mousterian were found in Cueva Millán in the area of Hortigüela. The Cueva Millán archaeological site is located near Hortigüela in a small side valley of the Cañón del Arlanza; the oldest known evidence of the Upper Palaeolithic on the Iberian Peninsula was found there, dating to between 45,000 and 43,000 years ago.

Culture and history

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Hortigüela is a Renaissance church with a nave and side chapels. Its high altar is Baroque and was created in 1654 by Francisco Martínez.

The Hermitage of San Pelayo originally had a pre-Romanesque structure with reused Roman ashlar blocks; its present construction phases date from the 12th to the 18th century.

The Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza and the Hermitage of San Pelayo in Hortigüela were designated as Assets of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of historic sites.
