Barriolacuesta: Watchtower, Cave and Trails in the Nature Park

Barriolacuesta is one of the six settlements in the Valle de Zamanzas. The valley lies within the Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón Nature Park, combining a small settlement with a protected landscape. History and Landscape

The Castillo de Barrio la Cuesta stands on the hill where the village is also located. The watchtower dates back to the period of the Christian Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula. Today, only a few ruins of the watchtower remain. This surviving remnant points to the site’s long history without detracting from the view of the landscape.

The Cueva de los moros, a natural cave, lies on the northern slope of the Sierra de Albuera. During the alternating periods of Christian and Muslim rule, it served both sides as a place of refuge whenever the other side was in power. The cave complements the historical traces of the watchtower with a site whose significance is linked to the changing power relations on the Iberian Peninsula.

The location on the mountain is also noteworthy: Barriolacuesta lies on the southern slope. In winter, it is the first place in the valley to receive sunlight and the last to lose it. This pattern of light provides a specific temporal reference point when observing the landscape throughout the day.

Buildings in and around Barriolacuesta

The village has a church dedicated to San Juan Degollado, or San Juan Bautista. Between Ailanes and Barriolacuesta there is also the Ermita de la Virgen de la Cuesta, a building dating from the 16th century. Due to its state of preservation, the ermita is currently used neither for religious nor cultural purposes.

Trails through the Valle de Zamanzas

The trail network in the Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón Nature Park includes the GR85 “Ruta de los sentidos” and the GR99 “Camino Natural del Ebro”. Both routes cross the Zamanzas area from south to north. The GR-99 follows the V-5147 towards Barrio la Cuesta.

Local Tradition
