Pozanco on the Adaja – History and Mill Route

Pozanco lies north of Ávila on the banks of the Adaja, at an altitude of 916 metres and at the beginning of the flat and hilly landscape of La Moraña. For planning purposes, the riverside location, the terrain and the history of the village can be considered as separate points of focus.

The combination of the riverside setting, elevation and changing landscape gives the village a clear spatial framework: on one side is the Adaja, and on the other is the transition to La Moraña with its flat and hilly sections. Geographical location

Pozanco can be reached via the N403; from this road, the AV.P.107 leads to Pozanco. If you would like to consider the journey separately from the landscape, you can first look at the river and elevation, followed by the two road connections.

Culture and history

Pozanco is a medieval settlement and was first mentioned in documents in 1250. In the 19th century, Pozanco had a hermitage dedicated to the Holy Vera Cruz (Santa Vera Cruz); its upkeep was funded by members of the brotherhood of the same name. The parish church of Pozanco is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist (San Juan Bautista). Religious crosses stand around the church and cemetery of Pozanco. The Molino Viejo mill in Pozanco also served as a residence and is well preserved. For a visit, these historical and religious aspects can be considered as a separate focus alongside the riverside landscape.

Nature and trails

La Balsa del Cubo in the municipality of Pozanco was a private grain mill with one millstone that operated twenty-four hours a day. On the mill route along the Adaja, you can continue from Zorita de los Molinos upstream or downstream to Pozanco, following the succession of mills. The mill route along the Adaja through Pozanco passes through a landscape of holm oak stands, pine forests, riverside woodland and numerous grain mills. The sections of the mill route along the Adaja can be covered by car or bicycle as far as the river; from there, follow the course of the river on foot. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the upstream and downstream directions and between travelling by car, bicycle or on foot.

The route combines several ways of viewing the journey: the succession of mills, the changing riverside vegetation and the division into a section as far as the river followed by a walking trail. The two directions from Zorita de los Molinos are also part of this differentiated description of the route.

Festivals

In Pozanco, a festival in honour of San Juan Bautista, the patron saint of the church, is celebrated on 24 June. Pozanco celebrates a festival in honour of the Virgin on the same day as Zorita de los Molinos; for Zorita, this day is considered the last Saturday of the month.
