Nature
The Ruta del Santo follows the right bank of the Río Arnoia. It leads to a chapel dedicated to Saint Bartholomew. The route along the right bank connects the river landscape with a clearly named destination and makes the chapel part of the same route description.
Above the Río Gato lies the Cascada del Río Gato. When there is sufficient water flow, the Cascada del Río Gato becomes an impressive spectacle.
The Río Gato flows through Cartelle via a narrow, deep gorge. Several watermills stand along its banks. The gorge and the mills are therefore directly associated with the river course that runs through Cartelle.
Landscape
The Torre de Sande stands on a hill. It offers a wide panoramic view over the Ribeiro and the valleys of the Miño and the Arnoia.
The Sierra Moura is a mountain in the vicinity of Cartelle. The Serra do Chan de Moiras is also a mountain in the vicinity of Cartelle.
The Monte San Trocao is a mountain in the vicinity of Cartelle. The Serra do Faro is a mountain in the wider regional area surrounding Cartelle.
Thus, in addition to the Torre de Sande viewpoint, several individual mountains with different geographical classifications are mentioned: Sierra Moura, Serra do Chan de Moiras and Monte San Trocao in the vicinity, and Serra do Faro in the wider regional area.
History
The Puente Romano de Freixo crossed a branch of the Via Nova, also known as Via XVIII, in the direction of the Arnoia Valley; this road ran between Aquis Querquennis and Lucus Augusti.
The Iglesia de Santa María de Cartelle dates from the 18th century and has a basilica floor plan. This floor plan comprises three naves, while the main façade has three doors.
The Torre de Sande dates back to a medieval fortress. Alfonso VII donated this fortress to the Celanova Monastery in 1141.
Thus, different aspects of the town's history place a Roman route, an 18th-century church building and a medieval fortress, together with its donation in 1141, side by side.
