Sedor: Pazo, architecture and Camino routes

A manor house with a distinctive architectural form

The pazo is one of the manor houses from Arzúa’s early modern period. Its floor plan is L-shaped, and the longer wing was left unfinished. An L-shaped floor plan is formed by two building wings meeting at an angle; here, the unfinished longer wing is an integral part of the house’s appearance. The pazo was built from granite blocks. The roof is covered with regional tiles and topped by a large Baroque chimney. There is also a main staircase and a small staircase between walls. These details offer different ways of looking at the building: its floor plan and state of completion, the stonework and roof design, and the staircases as part of its architecture.

The landscape also contributes to the impression made by the pazo: It offers views of a broad valley surrounded by mountains. The manor house’s distinctive form and the views of its surroundings are two different aspects to appreciate.

Sedor and the Camino routes

The Camino connections have different geographical roles. The access road from the N-547 to Sedor follows the route of the Camino de Santiago del Norte. The pazo is also associated with the Camino del Norte, the Camino Francés and the Camino Primitivo. For orientation, it is worth distinguishing the specific access road from the pazo’s other Camino connections. This helps put the pazo’s route connections in context without conflating them with the course of the access road.

The municipality of Arzúa offers an additional perspective: There, the Camino Francés crosses the municipality from east to west and passes through the parish of A Castañeda. The pazo as accommodation

The manor house has been converted into rural tourist accommodation. It has 11 rooms with private bathrooms, sitting rooms, a large dining room and an extensive garden.
