History and culture

Ceuta’s historical depth is reflected in a long succession of changing rulers: Ceuta was successively occupied by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Visigoths, Arabs and Portuguese for trading or military purposes. Roman and Byzantine traces have been preserved in the Murallas Reales. There are also remains of the Caliphal fortifications, the major Portuguese front dating from the 16th century and the Spanish expansions from the 18th century.

The Puerta Califal archaeological site is located inside the Muralla Real. At no more than 20 metres in length, it reveals a history spanning from prehistoric times to the present day. Access to the Puerta Califal is via a staircase at the site of the excavated areas.

The Museo Histórico Militar de Ceuta is housed in a 19th-century fortress known as Castillo del Desnarigado. It displays, preserves and interprets collections belonging to various units connected with the city of Ceuta and the Spanish Protectorate in Morocco. The permanent exhibition is divided into seven rooms. Ceuta’s centre is also home to a synagogue built in the 1970s as a replacement for an older synagogue, providing the Jewish community with a more modern temple.

Landscape and paths

Monte Hacho is a natural and historic viewpoint overlooking the Strait of Gibraltar. It includes hiking trails and fortifications. The Vuelta al Monte Hacho is an 11-kilometre tourist loop, for which around 2 hours and 30 minutes are estimated. Its difficulty level is low.

Water and park

A spectacular maritime canal crosses the isthmus of Ceuta. Between vertical walls, it connects the northern and southern bays. The Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo provides another distinctive waterfront location. Visitors can swim in its saltwater pools. The Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo also contains a botanical garden with gardens and plants. A museum about the park, its architect and its creation complements this site.

Ceuta’s cuisine also reflects its location between several cultural spheres. It is influenced by the proximity of Andalusia, particularly the provinces of Cádiz and Málaga, as well as by its proximity to Morocco.
