Culture
The Basilica and Necropolis of Ceuta are among the few surviving testimonies to Christianity and basilica-like structures in the far west of North Africa. The Museum of the Late Roman Basilica opened in 2006. In addition to the remains of the late antique basilica, it displays further finds relating to the history of the Ceuta isthmus – from its origins to the Portuguese conquest in 1415.
The Baños Árabes are among Ceuta's best-preserved Islamic medieval civic buildings. They were built between the 12th and 13th centuries and recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2007.
The monumental complex of the Murallas Reales was recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural on July 3, 1985. Portuguese builders expanded the complex and transformed the formerly dry moat left by the Arabs into a navigable moat. The Murallas Reales offer direct views of the Strait of Gibraltar and northern Morocco.
The Fuerte del Desnarigado houses a military museum with three exhibition rooms. There are also outdoor areas with remains of the 17th-century fort. The Museo del Revellín is located in a former military barracks building, constructed in 1900 and recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1989.
The Puerta Califal archaeological site preserves a historical sequence spanning from prehistory to the present over a distance of no more than 20 meters.
Nature and Coast
Ceuta has 21 km of coastline with beaches, coves and rocky stretches distributed across two bays. Playa del Chorrillo is the city's largest beach and has fine sand as well as warm, calm water.
The Fortaleza del Monte Hacho is an excursion destination offering views of Gibraltar, the Sierra Bullones and Ceuta. At 349 meters, Monte Anyera is the highest peak in the territory of the Autonomous City of Ceuta.
The Parque Marítimo del Mediterráneo, shaped by César Manrique, is a complex with natural saltwater pools, palm trees and cascades. It covers approximately 56,000 m² and has saltwater lakes, gardens and service facilities.
Trails and Landscape
The Vuelta al Monte Hacho route is a low-difficulty circular trail and takes approximately two and a half hours. It begins in Ceuta's city center and is about 11 km long, including a 6-km path around the mountain. The route offers views of Ceuta's coastline and cliffs, as well as the meeting point of the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
The Monte Anyera route is a 19-km circular trail of moderate difficulty and takes approximately four and a half hours. The Ruta de los fortines passes several of the most significant forts from the 19th century, which were built to monitor the border with Morocco.
Water and Local Character
The Foso Real can be crossed aboard the traditional excursion boat El Desnarigado on one of its numerous weekly routes. Local companies offer pedal boats, surfboards, kayaks and small boats for rent on the Foso Real.
Estofado de melva is a typical seafood dish from Ceuta and is related to marmitako.
Getting Around
The Port of Ceuta provides vehicle and passenger transport services on the Ceuta–Algeciras–Ceuta route. The cruise terminal at Muelle de España is just 100 meters from Ceuta's city center.
