Culture and History

Castell de Prenafeta is classified as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional (BCIN). The remains of the castle are known as Castell dels Moros or Torre dels Moros and lie at an altitude of around 750 metres. This castle site offers an exceptional panoramic view of the Conca de Barberà.

The old Prenafeta was abandoned at the end of the 18th century; the inhabitants moved to the present-day, more accessible location. In Prenafeta Vell, the old settlement centre of Prenafeta, which is also known as Vilafreda, the course of the main road can still be recognised. The ruins of the old Sant Salvador church have been preserved in Prenafeta Vell.

The Ermita de Santa Anna de Montornès is a hermitage built in the Catalan Gothic style, with a single-nave interior spanned by a wooden structure over stone diaphragm arches. It was probably the centre of the former settlement of Montornès, which has since disappeared. It is located in the area of Prenafeta and became a place of worship and gathering for several neighbouring places, including Prenafeta.

The present-day parish church of Sant Salvador in Prenafeta is designed in the Baroque style.

Paths and Route

The Cistercian Route GR175 passes through Prenafeta and is completed on foot or by mountain bike. Prenafeta has a stamping point for travellers on the Cistercian Route GR175. You can read the historical exploration and the connection to the route as separate approaches; no fixed order is required for this. The two means of transport mark different approaches to the route, while the stamping point records the specific local connection in Prenafeta. Thus, the route course, means of transport and local proof stand alongside one another as separate aspects.

Nature and Landscape

Geographically, Prenafeta lies east of Montblanc at an altitude of around 470 metres, at the foot of the western slope of Tossal Gros. Tossal Gros reaches an altitude of 867 metres and is the highest point of the Serra Carbonària. Tossal Gros is a viewpoint over the plain of the Francolí River; beyond the Serra de Prades and west of Montblanc lie the forests of Poblet.

The information on altitude, views and the regional surroundings can be considered independently as you explore the area step by step. The Serra de Miramar encompasses the area where old Prenafeta was located. The landscape can therefore be understood through several elevation references: Prenafeta lies at approximately 470 metres, the castle remains at approximately 750 metres and Tossal Gros at 867 metres. Thus, the settlement, castle site and highest point of the Serra Carbonària form a topographical sequence. The view of the Francolí plain complements the panoramic view from the castle with a second named landscape area.
