Montbrió de la Marca combines a castle with Templar and Hospitaller history, a historic mill, Baroque ecclesiastical architecture, and festivals centred on wine and regional specialities. Montbrió de la Marca Castle was owned by the Templars and later passed into the possession of the Hospitallers. The surviving remains of the original castle include the keep and additional rooms. The castle’s former use and the mill’s long operating history give the village two distinct historical features.

For those interested in cultural history, the castle, Molí del Temple, and Sant Llorenç in Montbrió de la Marca represent the history of lordship, milling, and Baroque church architecture. Molí del Temple is a historic water-powered grain mill in the former area of Montbrió de la Marca, on the banks of the Vallverd River. It was built between the late 12th and early 13th centuries and remained in operation until the beginning of the 20th century. Behind the building, the remains of the trapezoidal millpond can be seen. Thus, the mill comprises not only the building itself but also traces of its former use beside the water.

The Sant Llorenç church is a Baroque building with a rectangular single-nave layout and side chapels. Its floor plan and chapels are just as much a part of the village’s architectural character as the keep and rooms of the former castle. Together, these buildings reveal various facets of Montbrió de la Marca, from medieval lordship history to Baroque ecclesiastical architecture.

Routes and Landscape

The Ruta 8 de les Pedanies is 24.7 kilometres long, can be walked or travelled by mountain bike, and leads to Montbrió de la Marca via Plaça dels Arbres.

Montbrió de la Marca lies halfway along the GR-175 route between the monasteries of Vallbona de les Monges and Santes Creus. Font Voltada provides an additional individual landscape feature. It is a small rock alcove beside the Barranc de la Torrentera in the former area of Montbrió de la Marca. The route, riverbank, and rock alcove complement the village’s history with different landscape motifs.

Festivals and Culinary Delights

Events in Montbrió de la Marca take place on set dates. The Festa Maridatge de Vins i Caves amb Patés is held every year on the first weekend of August. The Festa Major is celebrated in honour of Sant Llorenç on the weekend closest to 12 August. Over the course of the year, this brings together wine, cava, regional specialities, and the patronal feast of Sant Llorenç.

At the entrances to the houses in Montbrió de la Marca, various pâtés can be tasted with selected wines and cavas from DO Conca de Barberà. Culture enthusiasts and wine lovers encounter two distinctive sides of the village here: its historic buildings and its festive culinary culture.
