Culture
In Montfalcó d’Ossó, next to the remains of a medieval fortress, stands a square tower built in the 12th century. The church in Montfalcó d’Ossó dates from the 17th century and is Baroque; its bell gable retains an earlier Romanesque appearance. The church in Bellver d’Ossó contains a Gothic wayside cross created in the 13th century.
Ossó de Sió preserves a rounded medieval town centre in which the houses formed a continuous structure that served as a defensive wall. The town centre also contains the Romanesque church of Mare de Déu del Remei and a large square. This church is documented as early as 1139, has Romanesque origins and was extensively remodelled. It was probably originally dedicated to Santa Maria; around the 14th century, its dedication was changed to Mare de Déu del Remei. The Creu de terme d’Ossó, a Gothic wayside cross, stands on Plaça Major.
The historical remains are thus distributed across several town centres and display different building functions: fortifications, religious buildings, wayside crosses and a mill building are all part of the picture, as are the large squares and continuous groups of houses.
History
On the second weekend of October, the Festa Major of Mare de Déu del Remei takes place in Ossó de Sió. In the town centre of Castellnou d’Ossó stands a Roman tower from the 2nd century BC with a circular ground plan and a diameter of approximately 24 metres. The building in Castellnou d’Ossó is a Romanesque hydraulic grain mill from the 13th century with a square ground plan and two storeys, which also served as a residential building.
Nature
The Sió stream crosses the municipality of Ossó de Sió in an east-northeasterly direction and forms its northern boundary along a short section. The La Ribera del Sió trail – PR C57 is a very easy route through the Plans del Sió and along a section of the Sió riverbank. The watercourse and the route thus refer to two landscape features: the Sió crosses the municipality, while La Ribera del Sió runs through the Plans del Sió and along a section of the Sió riverbank.
The Almenara mountain is located in the surroundings of Ossó de Sió. In the wider regional surroundings of Ossó de Sió lies Mount Suró.
