Sant Climent Sescebes – Albera, Megaliths and Local Festivals

Sant Climent Sescebes lies in the foothills of the Albera, whose surrounding hills reach heights of around 300 metres.

Landscape

Sant Climent Sescebes encompasses a large part of the middle valley of the Riera d’Anyet, which crosses the village from north to south. In addition to the Serra de Mirapols, the Corral d’en Comas reaches an elevation of 413 metres. The municipality’s seasonal wetlands include the Estany d’en Pous.

The Font Pudosa is located on the banks of the Riera d’Anyet, about 300 metres beyond the bridge on the road from Capmany to Roses. Its water emerges at 28.5 °C and has a distinct hydrogen sulphide odour. The water was officially recognised as medicinal mineral water and thermal water in 2009.

Getting there

Sant Climent Sescebes is located 6 kilometres from the N-II on a road that runs parallel to the Albera and leads from this main road to Roses. The village is 18 kilometres from each of the two AP-7 exits: Figueres, exit 4, and La Jonquera, exit 2.

Culture

The megalithic route passes below the Sepulcre de Corredor de la Gutina and runs alongside the Menhir de la Murtra. The Menhir de la Murtra is 3.45 metres high and stands next to a smaller menhir measuring 1.70 metres in height.

Santa Fe dels Solers is considered one of the most interesting pre-Romanesque buildings in the Empordà. At Vilartolí, the trenches known as Les Trinxeres are still visible, including structures at the Serra d’en Cintet and the Collet de les Feixetes.

La Passió de Sant Climent has been performed continuously every Holy Week since its first performance on Good Friday in 1976. The Passion play is performed outdoors in the Horta d’en Cusí, in a natural setting. La Passió de Sant Climent uses its own script, which is changed every year.

Sant Climent Sescebes celebrates two major local festivals every year: the winter festival on 23 November and the summer festival on 29 August; both include Sardana performances and dancing.

Numerous hiking and cycling routes lead from Sant Climent Sescebes into the protected natural area of l’Albera. Itineraries for hiking and running are available from itinerannia.cat.

The Vinyes dels Aspres route is recommended for mountain biking and gravel biking and includes the notable ascent to Castell de Requesens. For road cycling, secondary roads from Sant Climent Sescebes lead to destinations such as Coll de Banyuls and Sant Pere de Rodes.

The local tourism organisation presents the wine and vine tourism of Sant Climent Sescebes as more than just a wine tasting and suggests experiences in the vineyards.
