Culture and History
In the centre of Palafrugell is the Museu del Suro. The museum acquires and preserves the heritage associated with the cork industry in Catalonia. It interprets and communicates this heritage, which has shaped a shared landscape, industry, way of life and identity.
The Museu del Suro is located in a former cork factory considered the most important in Spain’s industrial sector. The complex of the former cork factory is distinguished by its Modernist elements, dimensions and structure. Can Mario houses around 220 sculptures dating from the 1960s to the present day. The Can Mario complex is a cultural space for viewing art around Plaça de Can Mario.
The Conjunt Monumental de Sant Sebastià de la Guarda includes a 15th-century watchtower. This watchtower is recognised as a “Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional”. The complex also includes a signposted Iberian archaeological site dating from the 6th to the 1st century BC. The Conjunt Monumental de Sant Sebastià de la Guarda documents human use of a privileged location for at least 2,600 years.
Literature and Local Life
The Fundació Josep Pla organises permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions. It also organises routes and workshops. The Ruta Josep Pla follows the biographical and literary connections of the writer Josep Pla. It can be completed independently using the information in the route folder available at the Fundació Josep Pla. The starting point is the writer’s birthplace in Palafrugell.
The Mercat diari de Palafrugell is located in the town centre. It includes the daily fruit and vegetable market as well as the covered meat and fish markets.
Water and Coast
The Carriles Acuáticos of Palafrugell form a public network of marine and open-water routes. This network is used for sports, leisure and educational activities. The Carriles Acuáticos are marked and signposted routes. They enable swimming in the open sea and snorkelling.
A 1-kilometre section runs between Calella De Palafrugell and Llafranc. Another section is 1.2 kilometres long and runs from Tamariu to Aigua Xelida.
Nature and Local Traditions
The coast of Palafrugell includes rocks, cliffs, beaches and secluded coastal coves. Recommended activities on the coast include boat trips, kayaking and walks. The Jardins de Cap Roig combine botany, history, landscape and art. La Garoinada is a traditional gastronomic campaign in Palafrugell.
