Discover Orriols: Castell-palau, Sant Genís and the Via Augusta

Castell-palau d’Orriols is a large rectangular building with a central courtyard, constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries and featuring a remarkable Renaissance façade.

Culture and history

The historic centre of Orriols consists mainly of restored and well-preserved houses. Portals and windows dating from the 16th to the 18th century reveal several periods of local architectural design.

Sant Genís d’Orriols preserves a single-nave Romanesque structure with a slightly pointed vault and a semicircular apse; the church has been documented since 1066 and was probably built in the 12th century. This means that one place contains both a religious building with a medieval tradition and a Renaissance building whose construction period extends into the 17th century.

The Estris Antics d’Orriols exhibition displays restored agricultural tools and household objects. Bespoke guided tours of Estris Antics d’Orriols can be arranged for schools and other groups. A visit to the exhibition therefore combines the presentation of rural working tools with objects from everyday domestic life.

The Festa Major de Sant Genís in Orriols takes place on the Sunday closest to 25 August. The Aplec del Remei in Orriols is scheduled for October. The two dates therefore fall in different parts of the year, giving the local events calendar a seasonal sequence.

Routes

The Via Augusta markers lead in Orriols as far as the church square. After Orriols, the Way of St. James continues towards Viladasens via the GR-1 and the AP-7. Among other sections, the route follows the camí de Mas Vitó.

The Puig d'en Brugada summit is located in the surroundings of Orriols. The Muntanya de les Mines summit is also in the area. The Muntanya de Sant Miquel summit is likewise located in the surroundings of Orriols. In the wider regional surroundings of Orriols lies Platja de la Devesa beach.
