Calabuig: Trails along the Fluvià and History

The village of Calabuig lies on a hill near the southern bank of the Fluvià River. The church of Sant Feliu stands at the highest point of Calabuig. From Sant Feliu, the view extends across the Empordà plain to the Bay of Roses. The narrow, steeply rising streets of Calabuig climb the northern slope of the hill towards the church of Sant Feliu. Behind Sant Feliu, a path leads down to the springs of Calabuig.

Nature and Trails

Along the banks of the Fluvià, trails run from Calabuig towards Bàscara. These trails also lead to the neighbouring villages of Vilaür and Arenys d’Empordà. The trails along the Fluvià near Calabuig are used by walkers. Cyclists also use these trails.

Culture

The Molí de Calabuig is located on the banks of the Fluvià River. The small chapel of the Molí de Calabuig is dedicated to Sant Nicolau. The small chapel of the Molí de Calabuig dates from the period when the building was extensively renovated. This extensive renovation took place at the end of the 19th or beginning of the 20th century. The church of Sant Feliu in Calabuig is mentioned in a document. The document dates from 1157. The present-day church of Sant Feliu occupies a room in the Castell de Calabuig. It may be the former great hall. The surviving remains of the Castell de Calabuig date from the period after its destruction in the era of Jaume I. In modern times, these remains were used as a parish church. The surviving remains of the Castell de Calabuig are integrated into the present-day church building of Sant Feliu. The Festa Major of Calabuig takes place at the end of July.

History

The Castell de Calabuig is said to have been destroyed by royal troops in 1275. This destruction is said to have been connected with a revolt by Count Hug V of Empúries and other nobles from the Empordà; among them were the Viscounts of Rocabertí. The former priory of Sant Nicolau de Calabuig was located about 2 km southeast of Calabuig, on the site of the present-day country house Can Pagès. The present-day country house Can Pagès was formerly called Mas Margall. The nearby priory of Sant Nicolau de Calabuig belonged to the Abbey of Sant Esteve de Banyoles. It was founded on the remains of an ancient building. Only partially preserved remains of the nearby priory of Sant Nicolau de Calabuig have survived. These remains are located in the buildings of Can Pagès.

The history of the village is therefore tied to several named places: Sant Feliu on the hill, the Molí de Calabuig on the Fluvià, and Can Pagès southeast of the village. Their different locations and historical functions each represent a distinct part of Calabuig’s recorded history.
