Holiday Apartment in Fornells De La Muntanya – Romanesque Architecture and Trails

Fornells de la Montanya brings together a Romanesque church, historical ties to Dòrria and trails through the valley. Sant Martí de Fornells de la Muntanya makes a distinctive cultural impression with its 12th-century Romanesque structure. The building was altered and extended several times over the course of its history. Particularly striking is the bell gable covered with slate slabs.

Culture and History

The history of the settlement is closely connected with Dòrria. Fornells de la Montanya appears to have originated as a winter refuge for the inhabitants of Dòrria. The ecclesiastical connection is also documented: the parish of Sant Martí de Fornells is a suffragan parish of Dòrria. The settlement and its church are therefore part of a historical context that extends beyond the individual building.

Landscape

Fornells de la Montanya lies at an altitude of 1,280 metres on the valley floor. The valley widens somewhat at the settlement. Between the slopes, there is room for vegetable gardens and hay meadows, so in addition to its high-altitude setting, the agricultural land is also part of the landscape. The interplay between the valley floor, meadows and historic buildings shapes the immediate character of the settlement.

Trails and Connections

The GIV-4016 road runs from Planès via Fornells de la Montanya to Toses. Another access route branches off from the N-260 near the turn-off to Dòrria. In addition, a forest track in very good condition connects Fornells de la Montanya with Nevà. Different routes therefore form part of the settlement’s geographical context: the roads connect named places, while the forest track provides a separate connection through the woods.

When travelling on the forest track and using the routes described, checking current road conditions is part of the usual preparation. Traffic plans may also change and should be checked before setting out.

Routes and Activities

Route 13 leaves Fornells de la Montanya via the Pujada de la Quintana and then follows the old path from Fornells to Dòrria. The historic route is therefore part of an explicitly named route. In Fornells de la Montanya, Route 28 points to two cultural attractions: the Sant Martí church and the Casa-museu del Pastor.

The “Pastors i transhumància” activity follows a hiking route from Planoles to Dòrria. This activity also includes a visit to the Museu del Pastor in Fornells de la Montanya. The Casa-museu del Pastor is likewise a destination on Route 28. Music and Events

A scheduled cultural event complements the historical and landscape themes. The “Romànic en Viu” concert series took place in 2026 in churches of the Baronia de Toses. For Fornells de la Montanya, the Museu del Pastor building was scheduled to be the venue on 19 August 2026.
