Since the 16th century, El Membrillo had been an alquería belonging to Las Herencias. At the same time, the village lies in a flat landscape with holm oaks, rockroses and watercourses.

Culture

The parish church of El Membrillo dates from the first half of the 16th century. The church has a silvery-white cross in the Plateresque style with Gothic remnants.

El Membrillo is also home to two verraco sculptures, preserved as evidence of Iberian-Celtic settlement. Archaeological finds at Cerro del Castillo near the Tajo attest to a later Iberian-Roman settlement.

Experts believe that the baptismal installation in the Iglesia de San Sebastián dates from the 12th century.

Nature

Festivals

The Día del Cristo included a drinks reception at which the four respective mayordomos offered only aperitifs. The same festival also included an auction of the four wooden carrying arms that support the image of Christ.

The Día del Cristo was celebrated on the first Sunday in September. The two dates therefore fall in different seasons; when planning a trip, you can distinguish between a January date and a September date.

The patron-saint festivals in honour of San Sebastián took place from 19 to 21 January.
