Discover Mazarete: Trails, Nature and History

The municipality of Mazarete is home to the Sabinar de Mazarete, considered one of the largest and best-preserved juniper forests in Europe. It consists of centuries-old juniper trees and is of great ecological and landscape value.

Trails

The Ruta Solanillos is a circular trail through Monte de Solanillos for independently exploring the surrounding area; it starts and ends at the Centro de Educación Ambiental.

It is 13 km long, has a cumulative elevation gain of 315 m and is of medium to low difficulty. The route also offers a 7 km partial loop between waypoints 3 and 9.

In the Valle de los Artesones section, there is a signposted viewpoint accessible from the trail. The Senda de los aceiteros follows an old path running from north to south through Monte de Solanillos, connecting Mazarete with places near Ablanque.

Nature

The Mazarete resin factory was built in 1882 by the industrialist Calixto Rodríguez, who named it “Cándida” in honour of his mother.
