La Puerta: Romanesque Architecture, Bridges and Paths along the Arroyo de la Solana

Culture

The portal of the parish church opens onto the south wall and has five semicircular archivolts. Three of them feature shaftwork or zigzag ornaments in the style typical of Castilian Romanesque architecture.

The furnishings of the parish church include an embossed silver processional cross. The goldsmith Francisco Becerril, who came from Cuenca, created it in the mid-16th century.

The medieval bridge of La Puerta is considered one of the most important medieval bridges in the Alcarria. Another bridge over the Arroyo de la Solana has Roman origins, a single semicircular arch and stone railings on both sides.

Smaller structures also form part of the surrounding landscape. The ruined Ermita de Santa Ana stands on the left side of the road to Trillo. At the Ermita de Montealeja, only the chapel building remains; the former caretaker’s house, hostel and stables have collapsed.

Landscape

Cerro de las Piedras is the most distinctive landscape feature of La Puerta. Its rocky ridge protects the village from the westerly winds.

La Puerta lies in a small valley on the Arroyo de la Solana, whose waters flow into the Tajo through the Entrepeñas Reservoir.

Routes

After turning off the N-204, the access road follows the CM-2015 to kilometre 14 and then continues to La Puerta. On the Viana de Mondéjar–Cifuentes stage, a turn-off leads down to La Puerta.

In the final section of the Meandros del Tajo route, the trail passes through the La Puerta area via Los Casares and El Rabo de la Sartén to the Ermita de Montealejo.

The path to the Ermita de Montealeja is 16.2 km long, takes about five hours and can be walked at any time of year. The Ermita de Montealeja is reached on the route from La Puerta after 8.1 km.
