Espinar – Black Architecture and Hiking Trails

El Espinar is considered one of the most important examples of Black Architecture. The village lies on a hill surrounded by wooded ravines and orchards. If you would like to consider culture, landscape and activity separately, these three approaches can be clearly set alongside one another when planning your own trip.

Culture

At the entrance to El Espinar, there is a small covered washhouse. It stands over a basin lined with slate slabs. The traditional houses have roofs with large slate surfaces. Their entrances are protected by porches and tejaroces.

The parish church of El Espinar is built of slate masonry. It has a bell gable with an opening for the bell. The church entrance is protected by a covered porch formed by the extension of the roof.

For sightseeing, you can consider small architectural elements and larger parts of buildings as different levels of observation alongside one another. Route planning can be organised independently of this.

Nature

From El Espinar, there are beautiful views across the valley of the Jarama River. Above El Espinar and Roblelacasa rises Cerro del Jaralón, at an elevation of more than 1,000 metres. On the other side of the mountain massif lies the Río Jaramilla.

You can view the valley, the higher mountain and the river on the opposite side as different spatial reference points. For your planning, a focus on the landscape can be weighted differently from a focus on the village’s architectural forms.

You can regard the details of the village as a cultural focus, while considering the views and mountain range as a separate landscape focus. The trails can be treated alongside these as a separate activity theme.

Hiking

The first stage of the GR 60 runs through Campillejo, El Espinar and Roblelacasa and ends in Campillo de Ranas. The PR-GU 09 circular hiking route is 9 km long and connects the villages of Roblelacasa and El Espinar with the Pozos del Aljibe.

Getting There

The route to El Espinar follows the CM-101 to Humanes, then the CM-1004 to Tamajón and finally the GU-186. Along the way, it passes through Campillejo.
