Villares del Saz: Telegraphy, Churches and Local Festivals

In Villares del Saz, Tower No. 14 of the optical telegraphy system is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The Villares del Saz telegraph was part of the Madrid–Valencia optical telegraph line, which was established in 1844.

Culture

The Iglesia de Santa Eulalia de Mérida was built in the 15th century on the ruins of a former Templar fortress. It was first rebuilt in the 16th century. The Ermita de Jesús Nazareno also dates from the 15th century and features traditional architecture.

The Ethnographic Museum displays photographs, agricultural equipment, furniture, school materials, and objects and tools from the former life of the local population in four rooms. The Torre del Monje is located in a place called El Congosto on the Záncara River, within the municipality of Villares del Saz.

The Torre del Monje has an elongated window with a voussoir arch, as well as a smaller, square window in the upper section. The open-air museum is located 2 km from Villares del Saz, between almond trees and agricultural fields, and features sculptures carved from stone.

The Cueva de los Altillos preserves remains of the medieval Castillo de Moses castle from the 13th century, which probably belonged to the Templar Order. The Cueva de los Altillos can be visited while its galleries are being restored and cleaned.

Traditions

On the night before Easter Sunday, “Macollas”—bundles of newly growing wheat—are traditionally placed on doors and windows in Villares del Saz. During the fire tradition on the eve of Saint Eulalia of Mérida, groups of friends grill meat and fish over the embers and eat together there.
