Discover Uña: Lagoon, Gorges and Trails

The Laguna de Uña covers approximately 15 hectares and lies at the confluence of the Arroyo del Rincón and the Río Júcar. Hiking, birdwatching and regulated fishing are possible recreational activities at the lagoon. There is also a birdwatching observatory there.

Landscape

Around Uña, there are hiking and mountain biking routes through pine forests and limestone gorges carved by the waters of the Júcar and its tributaries. The landscape around Uña includes viewpoints over valleys, pine forests, gorges, muelas and parameras. The Arroyo de la Madera forms small clear pools in hollows and caves in the limestone before flowing into the Río Júcar.

Las Catedrales de Uña are rock walls with narrow passages. From the foot of the canyon carved out by the Arroyo de la Madera, they provide access to the summit. The Cascada Tobácea de Uña can be viewed from the Mirador del Travertino de Uña. The Ermita de la Virgen del Espinar is a structure covered by rock and vegetation and can be reached via a small path behind the viewpoint at the lagoon.

Things to do

The PR-CU 37 Sendero del Escalerón y La Raya begins in Uña, leads over the Escalerón and returns via La Raya. It offers views of the lagoon, the cliffs and Uña, as well as opportunities to observe the wildlife of the surrounding area, especially griffon vultures.

The Ruta de las Pozas del Arroyo de la Madera is a linear, easy 2.5-kilometre walk. The approximate walking time for the route in one direction is 35 minutes; the start and end points are at Uña's car park. The circular route at the Laguna de Uña begins at Uña's central car park, which can be reached from Cuenca via the CM-2105 road. The Centro de Recepción de Visitantes de Uña is located in the centre of Uña, opposite the Laguna de Uña, and lies along the PR-CU 37 Sendero del Escalerón y La Raya. The Cueva del tío Manolo in the municipality of Uña is suitable as an introduction to caving due to its simplicity; a provider of active tourism services must be commissioned for the visit.

Culture

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel was built in the 13th century and remodelled in the 16th century. It is a masonry building with a bell gable and a wooden pitched roof. The festivities of San Roque on 16 August offer an opportunity to experience the folklore of the Serranía de Cuenca.

Uña's historic Fuente-Lavadero is located near the Laguna de Uña and has a picnic area in the adjacent grounds. The Escuela Regional de Pesca Fluvial de Uña was founded in 1989. It promotes river fishing as a recreational activity compatible with the protection of and respect for the aquatic habitat and provides knowledge about fishing and river ecology.
