Culture

The restored Castillo de Belmonte now serves as a museum and event venue. Visitors can explore its courtyards, grand rooms, battlements and towers. The battlements of the Castillo de Belmonte offer privileged views of Belmonte’s historic old town and the plain of La Mancha surrounding it. The combination of architecture and landscape creates a distinctive visual feature within the visit.

The Museum of the Collegiate Church of San Bartolomé in Belmonte contains altarpieces, sculptures, textiles and goldsmiths’ work. The museum’s most important works date predominantly from the 16th to the 18th century. The cultural stops therefore differ in scale, historical period and form of presentation.

Belmonte offers a self-guided mobile route through the town’s monumental heritage and streets, with interactive content accessed via QR codes at various stops. The digital experience in Belmonte combines videos, 360-degree images and augmented reality.

History

Medieval combats and historical re-enactments of major historical events take place at the Castillo de Belmonte. Significant sections of Belmonte’s medieval city walls have been preserved; of the original five gates, three remain: the Puerta del Almudí, the Puerta de Toledo and the Puerta de Chinchilla.

The Casa de Recreación Histórica Bellomonte is housed in a 16th-century building that once formed part of a former comedy courtyard. An interactive display there explains what everyday life was like for a citizen at the end of the 15th century. In this way, Belmonte brings together surviving architectural remains and vividly narrated everyday history.

Landscape

Around six windmills in Belmonte crown the hills around the town and shape the landscape of La Mancha. Their position on the heights adds another distinctive element to the surroundings viewed from the battlements.

The Molino El Puntal is the only one of Belmonte’s windmills with fully preserved and operational milling machinery. It shows visitors how the historic milling system worked and the traditional craftsmanship associated with it.
