Viveda: Churches, Manor House and Camino de Santiago

The parish church of Viveda dates from the 16th century and features Romanesque architectural elements. The Casa-Torre de los Calderón de la Barca is designated as a historical-artistic monument and an asset of local interest.

Culture and History

The Palacio de Peredo is a manor house in the Montañés architectural style dating from the 17th century and is currently used as a cultural and museum exhibition venue by the municipality. Pedro Calderón de la Barca came from the family associated with the Casa-Torre de los Calderón de la Barca.

The Church of San Salvador de Viveda preserves a very old inscribed stone slab, which is interpreted as indicating that it was consecrated either in the final years of the 9th century or during the first quarter of the 10th century. Local legends associate the Casa-Torre de los Calderón de la Barca with Saint Francis of Assisi's overnight stay during his pilgrimage to Compostela.

Routes

Viveda offers equipped outdoor areas for picnics for both local residents and visitors. The “El entorno del Palacio de Peredo” route is approximately 5 km long.

The Casona-Palacio de Peredo can be reached from opposite the parish church of Viveda via a municipal road leading up to the hilltop where the palace stands. The Camino de Santiago passes through Viveda on its way to Santillana del Mar; a sculpture of Saint Francis of Assisi stands at the roundabout where it enters the village.

A municipal walking route begins in Viveda and ends at the boundary with the municipality of Alfoz de Lloredo.
