Routes and Traces of Time

The 44.7-kilometre driving route “Por los pueblos de Valdáliga” passes through Treceño. The historic route of Charles V includes one stage between San Vicente de la Barquera and Treceño, and another between Treceño and the Valle de Cabuérniga. The old Camino Real through Treceño is also part of the area’s history of historic routes: pilgrims travelling to Santiago once used it as an alternative route. Comparing the total route with its stages helps you mentally organise the different ways of travelling through the area.

Architectural Heritage and History

The architectural history includes the church of Santa María la Mayor, which is first documented in the year 853. From the 9th to the 12th century, it served as a monastery and subsequently as a church; it continues to serve this function today. Its high altar is a Churrigueresque altar dating from 1739, created by Juan Antonio del Mazo Arce.

The Casona de La Salceda in Treceño is a 17th-century manor house built on the commission of the notary Juan Calderón Escalante. It is listed in the General Inventory of the Cultural Heritage of Cantabria. Its architectural details include an upper-storey solana on a projecting balcony with a wrought-iron railing.

The Palacio de Guevara dates in its present form from the 18th century. At the rear, it retains a converted medieval tower. Also preserved are the remains of an earlier round arch and an ogee-arch window, probably dating from the 15th or 16th century.

The remains of Treceño prison date from the 16th century and bear witness to the site’s former legal importance. Another trace of the area’s economic and cultural history is the Reales Salinas of Treceño: they were exploited for centuries and were historically an important source of revenue.

The lintel of the entrance to the courthouse of the Valle de Valdáliga has also been preserved.

Landscape

Treceño lies along the Río Escudo. To the south, the Sierra del Escudo de Cabuérniga forms a natural barrier separating the coastal area from the inland region. North of Treceño lies a holm oak forest, above which Monte Corona begins.
