El Tejo: Nature, Culture and Coastal Paths

Nature

El Tejo combines a dune landscape, marshland, coastal views and historic paths to create a destination with several distinct facets. Part of the El Tejo area belongs to the Oyambre dunes, and part to the Marisma de Zapedo. From El Tejo, there is a view of Playa de Oyambre beach. The different landscape connections help you mentally consider nature and the coast separately when planning your trip.

Culture

The Iglesia de Santa María de El Tejo stands on the site of a former monastery of the Premonstratensian Order of Saint Norbert. In the 12th century, King Alfonso VIII granted this order properties and rights in the area. At the same time, the church is one of the few surviving examples of Romanesque architecture in the Saja Nansa comarca.

The southern wall of the Iglesia de Santa María de El Tejo still features Romanesque corbels from the cornice and a window in an advanced Romanesque style with a chequerboard design. Access is via the western coastal road CA-131 from Comillas towards San Vicente de la Barquera. At the entrance to Oyambre Natural Park, opposite the marshland of the Ría de La Rabia, turn onto the CA-363, which leads uphill to the church.

Activities

El Tejo also offers a range of options for active days. Campo Club de Golf Oyambre in El Tejo has nine holes and a par of 57.

On the waters of the Ría de Oyambre, Oyambre Surf offers two-hour SUP courses; more experienced participants can also surf the waves at sea. In addition, Oyambre Surf offers two-hour surfing courses on the beaches of Oyambre and Merón (San Vicente de la Barquera) in small groups divided by ability level. The various options can be distinguished by activity, setting and group structure. The two-hour duration of the courses provides a different timeframe from the golf course’s nine holes; at the same time, the Ría de Oyambre, the sea and the two beaches are distinct settings.

Pilgrimage Route

The Camino del Norte stage from Comillas to Unquera has a distinctly rural character and a changing up-and-down profile. Along its route, it passes through the Ría de la Rabia and Oyambre Natural Park and runs through El Tejo. When planning, the Camino section and the water activities can be considered separately according to their respective formats. This places a section with a changing profile alongside clearly defined water activities, without suggesting that they describe the same travel experience.
