Nature and Paths

The summit known as Alto de la Gigüela offers a 360-degree panorama of Santander, Santander Bay and almost the entire municipality of Santa Cruz de Bezana; in clear weather, the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains and the Picos de Europa can also be seen.

Along the route to Alto de la Gigüela, flora typical of Mediterranean and Atlantic habitats grows, including holm oaks, hazelnut trees, chestnut trees and oaks. One route crosses the municipality of Santa Cruz de Bezana from north to south and passes through its agricultural past as well as various natural areas.

The Arroyo Otero flows through Sancibrián and Soto de la Marina to La Canal, where its water reaches the sea. The pedestrian path along the Arroyo Otero runs between the Ronzón Mill in Sancibrián and the San Juan de la Canal Mill in Soto de la Marina, connecting the two places safely.

Culture and History

The Ronzón Mill in Sancibrián is documented as early as 1496; its large dam gives it architectural value. The remains of the Izmas Mill are located in Sancibrián; the mill is documented as early as 1504.

The Ermita de San Cipriano in Sancibrián was built in the 15th century and is a single-nave masonry building. Sancibrián is the birthplace of the sculptor Eduardo Anievas Bezanilla.

The 2025 Fiestas de San Cipriano in Sancibrián included traditional tastings and games. The 2025 Fiestas de San Cipriano began with a Mass at the Ermita de San Cipriano, followed by the distribution of hot chocolate to the community. They combined tradition, music and traditional cuisine.

The Fiestas de Fátima in Sancibrián included a chorizo tasting donated by Somagar. They also included a children’s amusement park, followed by the “Magic” children’s celebration with costumed characters.

Santa Cruz de Bezana is one of the eight municipalities of the Costa Quebrada Geopark, whose coastal and inland paths convey geological history to visitors. One route through Costa Quebrada leads from Playa de San Juan de la Canal beach via Covachos to La Arnía.
