Pesués: Camino del Norte, River Landscape and Culture

Pesués is home to numerous rows of traditional mountain houses and manor houses dating from the 17th to the 19th century. The town lies on official stage 09 of the Camino del Norte between San Vicente de la Barquera and Unquera. On the 16.4 km-long Camino del Norte stage, Pesués is located at kilometre 13.5.

Culture and History

The Hospital de La Misericordia was built in Pesués; it was attached to the Chapel of Santiago. The local festivals celebrated in Pesués include the Fiesta del Tomate. The Fiestas de San Pedrucu are celebrated in Pesués on 31 July and 1 August. The festival includes activities for visitors, a solemn mass in honour of San Pedruco and a performance by the Picayos de Pesues.

Nature

The Tina Menor Estuary is an estuarine system representative of the Cantabrian coast, connected to the Nansa River and featuring numerous morphosedimentary units. Its sandy areas are easily accessible on foot at low tide and allow visitors to observe numerous morphosedimentary forms. El Sable Beach lies on the right bank of the Ría de Tina Menor, about 3 km from Pesués. Paddle surfboards can be rented at the Ría de Tina Menor or at El Sable Beach for independent exploration.

In the vicinity of Pesués, the Senda Fluvial del Nansa runs through the lower section of the Río Nansa SAC near the river mouth. There, it follows the river continuously through a well-preserved riverside landscape dominated by willows and alders, as well as hazel and chestnut trees. Along the lower section, grey herons, cormorants, white-throated dippers, grey wagtails and kingfishers can be observed. In the vicinity of Pesués, the Senda Fluvial del Nansa is also part of the Camino Lebaniego. The river, estuary, beach and wildlife observation can be considered as different nature-focused options alongside one another.

Routes

From Pesués, the Camino del Norte follows the railway line towards Unquera, passes beneath the Autovía del Cantábrico and continues downhill at a steady gradient to Unquera railway station. The recommended R6 Saja–Nansa route runs from Pesués via Cades, Rábago, Celis, Puentenansa, Carmona and Tudanca to Puente Pumar. The different types of routes and route points can be considered separately when you are classifying a linear section or a longer sequence of places.

Getting There

FEVE trains from Santander and Asturias arrive daily in nearby Unquera. From Santander or Asturias, Val de San Vicente can be reached via the A-8 and then via the Unquera or Pesués-Los Tánagos exit.
